01/2/2009 09:38 | crazy whilst the majority of companies are suffering from downgrades, it is very encouraging to see all the covering brokers are forecasting growth for 2009. sdl have recently announced the opening of a new office in greece, and the company website has lots of job openings at most of its worldwide offices. it has the cash to pick up any small distressed assets it may require. with the share price performing strongly over january, the current market cap has the company very close to ftse 250 index entry and the 300p level would be about there. | flyfisher

20/1/2009 09:10 | From TEMPUS SDL A year after SDL complained of the hit from a weak US dollar, currency moves are again upsetting the provider of language translation software. With three quarters of its sales in euros and dollars and most of its costs in sterling, SDL is a beneficiary of a weaker pound. However, that ignores the adverse effect of its hedging activities, which mean that last year's profits will be £500,000 lower than they might otherwise have been. So it is to SDL's credit that it was able to state yesterday that 2008 earnings will be ahead of forecast. Revenues were up 22 per cent in constant-currency terms, or a solid 11 per cent once acquisitions are stripped out. That performance is testimony to SDL's dominant position in its niche and the strong base of recurring revenues it draws from providing "localisation" services to multinationals such as Canon, Dell, HP and Philips. Should exchange rates stay roughly where they are, SDL's 2009 profits will receive a boost when its currency hedges expire in the middle of the year. The worry is that tougher times prompt customers to push for better prices and that demand in its technology division some 30 per cent of sales, where spending is more discretionary begin to weaken. SDL has about £30 million of cash, minimal capital expenditure and a highly variable cost base (some 2,000 freelance staff). At 266¼p, or ten times earnings, the shares are not conspicuously dear. A long-term buy. | phillis

19/1/2009 09:18 | "The strong performance in the year was achieved as a result of the company continuing to deliver on its vision to help global companies such as Dell, HP, Canon and Philips deliver content and product in multiple languages faster and more efficiently." thats the key statement some big names in there, suggesting SDL is becoming a bigger player, well done Mark Lancaster ;) | cr4zyness
