The UK will have to pay its Brexit “divorce bill” of up to £39bn even if no agreement is reached on a future trade deal with the EU, the head of Whitehall’s spending watchdog has said.

The head of the National Audit Office (NAO), Sir Amyas Morse, said on Tuesday that if parliament approves the withdrawal agreement in a vote in the autumn, it will become a legally binding treaty regardless of the success of separate trade talks.

DAILY BRIEFING: Lloyds and RBS set to post rising profits but Barclays to unveil loss

Among a series of first-quarter results this week, Lloyds is forecast to post a 9 per cent rise in profits to £2.3billion.

Barclays, meanwhile, is expected to record a £500million loss on Thursday, after a £1.4billion settlement with the US Department of Justice over the sale of toxic mortgage-backed securities in the lead-up to the financial crisis.

Royal Bank of Scotland will report its figures on Friday, with UBS analysts pencilling in profit of £1.3billion.

The Bank of England is likely to raise interest rates twice this year and twice in 2019, despite a sluggish economy, says a forecasting body.

Dividend consensus

Ahead of Friday's Q1, I thought it might be useful to update the consensus to include this morning's weekly update. In a sense, it's almost academic, since there's so much uncertainty, but it does serve to give a feel for what the analyst community has been and is currently thinking.

In a nutshell, the consensus has shown a steady deterioration from the position immediately before the Results in February. For FY2018, the figure has fallen from 9.05p on 19/2 to 5.91p now, and it is falling by the week. For FY2019, the figure has fallen from 15.36p on 19/2 to 11.99p now, similar trend.

This is purely for background, so I'll pass on the temptation for further comment!

The "RBOS Shareholders Action Group Limited" annual accounts have to be filed by May 2018.

They will make interesting reading.

I can't help noticing "Members's Funds" dropped from £2,963,128 in August 2015 to £564,496 in August 2016 even though there were 3 calls for extra cash during this period.
Since then there have been 2 other calls for cash from Members.

As none of this cash went to Signature I wonder what it was spent on !

n.b. As there were 7,000 Members each paying a minimum £100 every cash call would have netted around £1 million !

Let's not forget RBS is owned, in the main, by the public so the House Of Commons will be interested too.

Thanks again CI, I'm delighted that the Mail on Sunday continues to report on this saga. Interesting that Walsh is "only" claiming £4M for himself and his daughter, so where is the rest of the money Evalusafety is claiming going to? No word of that yet but matters seem to be heading to a conclusion on that topic. Must admit that I never thought anything of the Mike Neill thing, just thought he was their spokesman. And now we learn of where a substantial part of our contributions went.... to Walsh, £80 per hour on a "consultancy" basis, but the burning question is just how much in total did he actually get? This guy is a proper doozy, no mistake!

This is what I would like :-

1) Manx and Signature to organise the Settlement exclusively ((TICK))
2) "The Action Group" to do no more work and be paid for their time, travel and office expenditure (£1 million at most)
3) The Early Funders to receive no money - if they're not happy with that then they can sue the "Action Group" ((COURT))
4) The Corporate Claimants to give us the money they owe us ((ON GOING))
5) Total Costs to be Signature (£20 million), Bird & Bird (£6 million) and the "Action Group" (£1 million)

Thanks a lot CI, most interesting info, well done. I'm so glad common sense has prevailed and the judge has ordered the AG to hand over their records, albeit to an independent solicitor. Mind you, it will be very interesting to see what actual documents the AG will hand over as they are NOT going to do so willingly. Have a feeling this will come back to the Court.
