The pound climbed to the highest level against the dollar since just after the Brexit vote and U.K. government bonds tumbled as Bank of England policy maker Gertjan Vlieghe stoked speculation of an interest-rate increase within months.

There is clearly massive short covering on the £ especially in the Cable Trade.

The US Investment Banks must have all been shorting the £.

The jump in the £ over the last 24 hours is 2.65%.

Needless to say BP. and RDSB are suffering.

The pound jumped to its highest level in more than a year after a member of the Bank of England’s rate-setting committee added to expectations that interest rates could raise as soon as November.

Gertjan Vlieghe, an external member of the Bank’s monetary policy committee, put forward the arguments for a rise in rates “as early as in the coming months” in a speech to economists in London.

Even if the DoJ settlement were double the £3.8bn that has been provisioned the book value would only fall to about 275p and the shares would look ridiculously cheap since there would be a case for them to immediately trade on at least a 10% premium to this given returns on the core business and capital generation are not too dissimilar to that of LLOY. So DoJ news is a most important catalyst for a substantial rerating in my opinion. Only negative then would be timing and method of Government stock sales

Leeds yeah but still only 25p in old money. we need that DoJ fine to get sorted for this to rise..depending on size but then it will be argued and settled...Buying oppty when initially announced.
