Where there is (Shai) Hope there is a way. Amazing result by the West Indies and good luck to them. They needed a boost like this match to help them rebuild into a top team.

As for England, too casual and relaxed. They thought it was just a case of turning up.

England's two leading pace bowlers have been great servants but both looked jaded this summer, and as for the fielding, shocking complacency giving rise to dropped catches and overthrows

All eyes on Lords for the third and deciding Test Match.

The ONLY news of interest in the introspective US broadsheets is the flooding caused by Harvey in Texas. One has to dig deep to read about North Korea.

The FTSE 100 fell 0.95% to 7,331.16 on Tuesday morning after news that North Korea had launched a missile over Japan unsettled investors.

we@re heading for war in North K.. Its step 1 - UN again and then big attack which will lead to another Korean war. This is the most serious escalation since WWII and far bigger than last Korean war.

If North ~Korea has fired a missile over Japan, this marks a significant escalation and suggests that China is either unable to control North Korea or is using it as a proxy to maintain the pressure on Japan -- an ancient enemy -- in respect of the competing territorial claims.

Edit: The USA has a large fleet of war ships stationed in Japan.

Either way with Trump in the White House, what happens next is anyone's guess.

In relation to the GRG situation. This is far bigger than PPI and it's clear that RBS are now struggling to maintain their stance of no wrong doing. The Clifford Chance review has not only been discredited by section 166 report but now RBS themselves distancing from it. Political pressure is mounting on RBS to come clean on this unit which they simply cannot afford to do. But on the other hand it's increasingly likely that the truth is near. Police investigations on London, Manchester, Northern Ireland and Scotland are also now advancing.. this is a real and significant threat to the very liquidity of RBS. Without a shake up at the very top RBS will get dragged from Court to Court for years to come. McEwan has to go and it would not surprise me if the treasury have had enough of him. The resent BBC revelation demonstrated that RBS did not even fully cooperate with the S166 review. More bad news will be on our screens soon and without a serious shake up and strategy to honesty the bank is doomed LIBOR low balling being the greatest threat of all. With actions in London and NEW YORK by DOJ and RBS being part of a USD 400b action. This together with the resent Court loss to OPAL should see Q3 profits turn very negative !!

I'd really like to hear RBS's view on that report - not some anodyne mush but a serious response addressing individual cases. Pound to a penny a lot of these mistreated businessmen are rogues and vagabonds, or else total dreamers.

The £ has tumbled which is hitting the pockets of foreign workers and with things getting expensive they will reconsider and move on. Back to the 1970s soon .. you still have those lime green. Flares no . .?

Quite. As someone commented there this morning, it is trading like a bank share in q1/09.

Talking of brexit, the one issue which divided is the debate about Britain being overrun by Europeans.

The evidence is now becoming increasingly clear that there are far fewer seeking to set=up residence in the UK than the Home Officer (and its handmaiden -- Theresa May) would have us believe.

" Prime minister left looking isolated as figures show fewer than 5,000 foreign students stayed on in UK after visas expired "

Leeds does a good job on the msgboard. We all get a bit heated on here at times. Brexit was the big one.
Wish we could get progress on the RBS fine from the DoJ! Probably still a couple of months away!

Dogs of the Footsie: Thrashing FTSE 100 at halfway stage

Anyone who had a flutter on our Dogs back in February should be feeling pleased with themselves, as our portfolio of out-of-favour companies has built up a good lead over the FTSE 100 index (UKX) at the halfway stage.

My bank holdings are all pre-crash and the figures make horrible reading. But at least with Lloyds and Barclays my losses are less than 50%, and more important - as I do not need to liquidate - they are producing quite a nice yield, finally.

RBS is a more than 80% loss, no yield, no sign of a yield. My only consolation is that it is a far smaller holding than the other two.

grahamhite2, I am just keeping the thread alive. I have not invested in bank shares for a number of years. It keeps me firmly in the neutral corner with no axe to grind. That said I think that subject to the US not trying to kill RBS with a massive fine, it has weathered the worst.

Of course BREXIT will not help banks because it will keep interest rates low whilst inflation will push up costs and more generally the economy may suffer. But the cheap £ could make UK shares attractive to overseas buyers IF they believe that banks are on the mend.

Always a very nice thread leedskier but it almost seems to be just you these days!

I'm thinking of facing reality, taking the hit and moving on.
