New York-based SEC employee Steven Gilchrist was charged with three counts of making false statements regarding the nature of his personal financial holdings. As WSJ reports, the 48-year-old compliance examiner at the agency, allegedly certified that his stock holdings were in compliance with the agency's ethics rules, when in reality he had held shares of six companies that agency staffers are barred from holding. The SEC is "very disappointed that an employee allegedly made false statements to conceal prohibited holdings after being told by our ethics office to divest." Gilchrist, unlike Cohen, faces a maximum 15 year sentence!

THE DOW Jones ended above the psychologically-important 16,000 mark last night after investors were buoyed by news of falling US unemployment and an improving manufacturing sector.

The day's economic data releases also revealed a second straight month of falling wholesale prices.

Meanwhile, Janet Yellen's nomination to become the first woman to lead the Federal Reserve was waved through by the Senate banking committee. Its final hurdle will be a vote at the full Senate.

The US recovery appears to be on a firm footing, with initial claims for jobless benefits falling 21,000 last week, and a factory sector purchasing managers' index hitting an eight-month high.

Market should bounce on those awful Italian retail sales numbers. Gold will naturally tank as someone panic sells another $200 million worth in one hit at any price ;)

Yellen nomination clears Senate committee
As expected, the Senate Banking Committee backs the nomination of Janet Yellen to be the next head of the Fed. Fourteen voted yes and eight voted no. Her confirmation by the full Senate is a fait accompli.
