28/5/2013 11:28 | A York mosque dealt with a potentially volatile situation after reports that it was going to be the focus of a demonstration organised by a far-right street protest movement - by inviting those taking part in the protest in for tea and biscuits. Around half a dozen people arrived for the protest, promoted online by supporters of the EDL. A St George's flag was nailed to the wooden fence in front of the mosque. However, after members of the group accepted an invitation into the mosque, tensions were rapidly defused over tea and plates of custard creams, followed by an impromptu game of football. | jazza

28/5/2013 08:42 | Worth quoting in full here ... CASSINI 27 May\'13 - 23:41 - 133999 of 134010 1 0 From Andrew Jackson\'s farewell address (Jackson president of the USA from 1829-1837). I know lots of you have seen this before but I think it deserves an airing every so often to remind how we got here (clue:one of the seven deadly sins...): \"The paper system being founded on public confidence and having of itself no intrinsic value, it is liable to great and sudden fluctuations, thereby rendering property insecure and the wages of labor unsteady and uncertain. The corporations which create the paper money can not be relied upon to keep the circulating medium uniform in amount. In times of prosperity, when confidence is high, they are tempted by the prospect of gain or by the influence of those who hope to profit by it to extend their issues of paper beyond the bounds of discretion and the reasonable demands of business; and when these issues have been pushed on from day to day, until public confidence is at length shaken, then a reaction takes place, and they immediately withdraw the credits they have given, suddenly curtail their issues, and produce an unexpected and ruinous contraction of the circulating medium, which is felt by the whole community. The banks by this means save themselves, and the mischievous consequences of their imprudence or cupidity are visited upon the public. if your currency continues as exclusively paper as it now is, it will foster this eager desire to amass wealth without labor; it will multiply the number of dependents on bank accommodations and bank favors; the temptation to obtain money at any sacrifice will become stronger and stronger, and inevitably lead to corruption, which will find its way into your public councils and destroy at no distant day the purity of your Government. Some of the evils which arise from this system of paper press with peculiar hardship upon the class of society least able to bear it. A portion of this currency frequently becamedepreciated or worthless, and all of it is easily counterfeited in such a manner as to require peculiar skill and much experience to distinguish the counterfeit from the genuine note. The planter, the farmer, the mechanic, and the laborer all know that their success depends upon their own industry and economy... But with overwhelming numbers and wealth on their side they are in constant danger of losing their fair influence in the Government, and with difficulty maintain their just rights against the incessant efforts daily made to encroach upon them. The mischief springs from the power which the moneyed interest derives from a paper currency which they are able to control, from the multitude of corporations with exclusive privileges which they have succeeded in obtaining in the different States, and which are employed altogether for their benefit; and unless you become more watchful in your States and check this spirit of monopoly and thirst for exclusive privileges you will in the end find that the most important powers of Government have been given or bartered away, and the control over your dearest interests has passed into the hands of these corporations. \" ADD: The above may downplay the role that incompetence also plays in these events. | speedy

28/5/2013 07:46 | Those in Thomas Cook may benefit .... CLUB Mediterranee, the global hotel chain which popularised the package holiday, yesterday said it was poised for a 541m (£463m) takeover by two of its biggest international shareholders, Chinese conglomerate Fosun and Axa Private Equity. Club Med, which rose to prominence in the 1960's and now competes with tour operators like Tui Travel and Thomas Cook, said it had taken note of the so-called friendly nature of the offer, which has the backing of the company's management. The 17 a share offer is at a 23 per cent premium to the company's share price on Friday, before the bid was announced. Shares in the company closed up 22.38 per cent after trading yesterday. The move could mark a turnaround in the European package holiday sector, which has been hit hard in recent years, with recessions across Europe curtailing consumer spending. | leedskier
