Jap interest rates jumping up. Considering the size of their debt I don't think they would have wanted that. BUT when you are printing like crazy, what do they expect?? People want higher rates due to the higher risk, due to the inflation related and currncy related default

FTSE 100 tipped to open flat to slightly higher this morning

PRE-OPEN REPORT: The headline index is tipped to open flat to slightly higher this morning, according to financial websites, with results from BT a focus after it unveiled a new TV sports package yesterday to rival Sky.

US & ASIA

In the US last night, the Dow closed flat at 15,083, the Nasdaq fell 4 points at 3,409 and the S&P500 lost 6 points at 1,627.

In Asia today, the Nikkei was recently up 409 points at 14,600 and the Hang Seng off 38 points at 23,173.

WTI crude oil traded at $96.09 a barrel and Brent crude at $104.47.

Gold settled at $1,456 an ounce.

LONDON MARKETS

In a quieter corporate diary today, interim results are due from International Consolidated Airlines Group and TUI Travel.

Final results are scheduled from BT Group.

Trading statements are expected from Catlin Group, Derwent London and Hutchison China Meditech.

BBA Aviation, Cenkos Securities, T Clarke, Clarkson, Dillistone Group, Hutchison China Meditech, John Laing Infrastructure Fund, Merchants Trust, Mobeus Income & Growth 4 Vct, NBNK Investments, Ocado Group, Princess Private Equity Holding and Solo Oil host their AGMs.

BRITAIN'S battered economy could be getting back on its feet at long last, with glimmers of hope offered by healthier manufacturing numbers and GDP forecasts yesterday.

The economy has shrugged off fears of a triple-dip recession, jumping 0.8 per cent in the three months to April according to estimates from the National Institute for Economics and Social Research (NIESR).
