25/4/2017 08:52 | FWIW, I have actually topped up on RIO this morning (3077p) as we have slimmed down our portfolio in other areas and there now seems too great a risk that FTSE will put in a fresh Up Segment (albeit probably short-lived) starting from last Thursday's potential base of 7097 (intraday)...Miners will need to participate if FTSE is to capture a new high beyond 7447 (intraday). Too early to set a revised target as it will partially depend on the performance of the wider market. | nasdaqpat

24/4/2017 21:58 | Ian Davenport.... Not that old actually! I only saw Yes in concert for the first time 2 years ago, and Alice Cooper in concert 5 years ago. And last month saw Rick Wakeman for the first time ever, a great performance.Just prefer music from that era, rather than the nondescript music from today's artists. | gateside
24/4/2017 12:34 | morning all have just read back through the weekends posts having been posting on this thread for well over a decade, its interesting to observe how things flow, but as long as the underlying atmosphere is friendly, there is no reason not to have wildly opposing views posted up here - when we rose up to £70 odd , we had a regular poster - Prof Sanks or many variants there of, who would dig out bearish news and tell us the share price was going back to 9.78 at every opportunity - he was obviously wrong - although in retrospect not as wrong as most of us thought , but on an underlyingly bullish board with lots of longs, it was very useful to know there was something hunting out the news to go against your views I am (still) long and bullish, so I don't really mind about Chris's posts, but if I was short , id like to see items that made me think - would help if they were up to date and not a month old, but i'm sure you get the idea interesting music choices there gateside - suddenly I don't feel quite so old! | ian davenport

24/4/2017 06:34 | Oh, I forgot to mention that we (the Videans) currently own a few shares in RIO but these will be promptly sold @ prices north of 3200p (currently targeting c3243p in conjunction with FTSE's likely recovery to c7267 over the next few days). | nasdaqpat
24/4/2017 06:12 | Assuming that 2018's projected EPS of c280p is both reliable & achievable, then a reasonable valuation for RIO lies somewhere between 2800p and 4200p (PER 10-15). Unfortunately, as previously stated, the RIO share price is in correction mode and the lower valuation of 2800p could well be overshot. Indeed, the gains from 1557p to 3718.5p would normally be subject to at least a (45.00%) give back and one should not rule out c(70.00%) if the broader market sell-off is severe. This means that the short-term target for RIO's share price is between c2746p (the optimistic case) and c2205 (the less optimistic case). Of course, if the market wide decline turns into a Bear market then even 1557p comes under threat. Enjoy! | nasdaqpat
24/4/2017 06:00 | Talk of £40+ a share for RIO is currently very premature. However, earnings forecasts are strong. Digital Look show projected EPS significantly ahead of 2014 & 2015 @ 386.67p for 2017 and 280.23p for 2018. Maybe someone would like to explain why there is supposed to be such a spike in 2017 earnings and then a drop in 2018? Unfortunately, these earnings estimates are likely to be already under pressure due to the recent drop again in the price of Iron Ore. | nasdaqpat
24/4/2017 05:50 | For RIO, the downward trend may have culminated with an share price of 1557p on 20 Jan 2016. That low was followed by a sustained rally consisting of 8 principal waves and worth 138.8% at its peak on 13 Feb this year when it reached 3718.5p intraday. Since then RIO and Miners generally have been in correction mode and this is due to intensify as the broader market may have entered a deep correction. | nasdaqpat
24/4/2017 05:41 | Mining stocks had a phenomenal run during the first part of the 21st century with significant peaks occurring in 2007 and early 2008 followed by slightly lower highs in 2011. Since then share prices have generally been in decline partly due to weak metal prices but also because demand, notably in China, has slowed. RIO has been no exception to the overall trend. | nasdaqpat
