Arja - I know we went through this many times in years past - its something to do with the stock that the ADR tracks - I think its UK BLT but Oz Rio, which is of course essentially the same company , but not exactly the same share because of accumulated tax treatments differences - afraid I can't recall exactly and haven't looked for a while, so might be worth chasing up the detail if it affects your trading . I just use the US prices as a guide to post close moves - but I haven't traded either for best part of a year , so not as involved in the minute to minute moves
still well long both though, so more than happy with the last few months

"old dart" - a new one on me, looks like you have started to pick up the lingo out there - but welcome back to the afternoon market

Rio Tinto uptrend looks set to continue, says Zak Mir
09:35 17 Jan 2017

The Rio Tinto PLC (LON:RIO) share price is set to continue its recent momentum and could close in on the £40 mark, according to technical analyst Zak Mir.

“The big turnaround came around the end of June last year with the break through the 200-day moving average and then the higher low for September underpinning the uptrend,” Mir explains in the latest Proactive Investors Tip TV Bulletin Board segment.

“We’re in a rising trend channel which we can draw from June. The top of the channel is probably heading as high as £38 or £39 and that’s the target for the next two to three months.”

interesting question Arnie - I've been an investor of Rio since the late 90s, traded it actively in the 2006/09 era before realising my trading was adding relatively little to the profits I was making from the underlying holding, so wandered off to look at other opportunities
I've been invested in most of the big miners at various times, but never AAL - I don't really know why - I guess I looked hard at it in 2006 and decided against, and as I have too many stocks to watch anyway, never revisited - but what that warning sign was, I now cant recall -don't follow it enough to answer re intra day or week swings but I would imagine it behaves like the other big miners
good luck if you give it a crack.
meanwhile I see we've managed to get above £34- its a few years since its been this high - roll on £40

Do the investors here in RIO also have an interest in AAL ??
and if not why not?
RIO moves regularly up and down a few pound, does AAL move the same ??
I have been buying and selling RIO as it moves regularly recently up and down between 3000 and 3300.
Will i be able to do the same with AAL ?

I guess that depends on where the share price goes now! I still have a core holding so not worried either way.

Elsewhere, mining shares, including Anglo American, Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and Antofagasta, were on the front foot, bolstered by encouraging Chinese data on producer prices.

China's producer prices were up 5.5% from the same month a year ago, beating expectations for a 4.5% increase. However, inflation eased back to an annual rate of 2.1% in December from 2.3% the previous month, falling short of estimates of 2.2

can anyone tell me why RIO went down about 200p the last few days then bounced back up 160p today, at this momento in time !!
What was it tht triggered the 5% gain ??

wad - is China's debt burden any greater than USA ??

Whilst China is state-controlled they can issue bonds & tell banks what to do.
Their manufacturing data this morning at 51.9 is better than expected.

Guess what you are saying is don't get carried away as stats can lie.

Putting it another way , the infrastructure projects have carried on to keep employment up , but they have created a lot of empty buildings and the loans are not getting paid back . The Chinese govt is breaching the gap but it is not sustainable. The Govt does not want to lose face by scaling back , the banks are not going to keep this up.
A colleague has just returned from China for a large industrial company and is amazed that Western business seems blind to this . I suppose the Chinese Govt control of News is a factor. Obviously this is a bit anecdotal , and maybe other global markets will emerge further for RTZ.

If China is the main customer , then ask a banker what they make of China's banks balance sheets. The numbers apparently don't add up , there is a bubble.
