12/5/2005 17:26 | Crystal: that is the FT's take on the story. They say in today's issue (apparently written before the announcement came out): "Ricardo linked to SAIC quest for MG Rover's R&D capability Ricardo... is understood to be collaborating with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation on securing for the Chinese carmaker the engineering research and development capability it had been seeking from MG Rover... It is well equipped to help SAIC with other aspects of the aborted MG Rover collaboration, including facilitating the transfer of Rover car and engine production to China, if... uncertainties are clarified over precisely what rights SAIC has acquired..." They add that Ricardo declined all comment yesterday. However, it may be that the call from the FT, and the realisation that the story had leaked, inspired Ricardo's late RNS. | diogenesj
12/5/2005 10:52 | Maybe they are trying to go unnoticed. I'm wondering whether Ricardo are negotiating to pick up parts of MG Rover so that SAIC can continue their development in an almost unbroken rhythm. Since the government changed pensions rules and tried to lumber SAIC with the pensions responsibility for years of Leyland losses, the Chinese will be understandably coy about employing staff in the UK. So my guess is that SAIC will go through Ricardo for intellectual property issues and R&D, and try to buy assets (like Rover production lines) directly from the administrators PwC. If SAIC bought Powertrain Limited, they might become responsible for pensions etc. It might even be possible for Ricardo to ignore Powertrain Limited (as a company) and cherry-pick-recruit the key personnel required to continue work on the Camcontec electronically controlled valve engines and the Antonov transmissions, etc. Of course, I'm looking at that with rose tinted (Antonov) glasses. SAIC might decide to go for the Ricardo 7-speed dual clutch transmission for their 'Rover' 75 series - assuming the Ricardo 7DCT is not Antonov based. All the above is speculation on my part. I'm going to go chat on mg-rover.org and see what they are thinking. | crystalclear
12/5/2005 10:37 | 18:12 is a strange time of day for that sort of RNS. What are they playing at? | typo56

23/3/2005 14:13 | Todays announcement that Artemis now have a holding of 2,947,833 shares in their Special Situations Fund is very encouraging because as at July 2004 they held 2,120,676 so they have incresed their holding by approx 40%. As most investors are probably aware Artemis are possibly the top rated UK fund management team at the moment with funds under management growing very quickly so they are a major institutional shareholder to have on board . It was only in January that another institutional investor ie Aegon Asset Management announced they had increased their stake to 2,071,724 so its good to see such a healthy appetite for the shares | tuffbet
02/3/2005 13:30 | The 2 stroke 4 stroke work has been with Ford in the past I think. On the other hand, Powertrain have the electronic valve contract with Camcontec, so their engines should be theoetically cabable of 2 stroke and 4 stroke operation in the future, and Gordon Brown has been in China, so maybe sombody has given a go-ahead on something there. Anyway, this looks like a source of revenue for Ricardo for a while. | crystalclear
02/3/2005 09:26 | Rodney Westhead sold, together with his wife, 100,000 shares in the company at 2.79 stg each. do they know something, or are they just taking a bit of capital? At least the share price is still going up, long may it continue. | dolphinspirit
14/2/2005 00:08 | I think the press said that Ricardo had been doing work for SAIC which related to the Rover deal. What I think the press was saying is that SAIC were evaluating the Rover K-series engine and seeing how well it fits their plans. But SAIC and Rover are likely to be producing cars together. I believe it is possible that a Rover 45 replacement will be built in Pudong in China in 2006. It would not surprise me if the SAIC Ricardo deal went beyond a sort of agressive evaluation and was related to producing something - hence maybe the ongoing Chinese stuff that Ricardo alluded to in a previous results. I also read that one of the other Chinese companies was working with AVL in Austria to design 18 different engine combinations (petrol, diesel, hybrid, large, small, etc). If they can afford that, then SAIC ought to be doing some very serious work, since SAIC VW is the biggest manufacturer in CHina, followed by SAIC GM, and I'm guessing that SAIC has the cash from the sale of SAIC Chery to throw around too. What that means for Ricardo I don't know. I'm not a Ricardo followers - more a sidelines person. It would not surprise me either if Ricardo was doing some work for (Rover sister company) Powertrain Limited's Antonov transmissions. I believe there are some fields of expertise where there are very few experts, and if a key guy left Powertrain Limited, I guess they would have to go to Ricardo to get that key bit of the transmission done. | crystalclear
10/2/2005 09:48 | Just seen interims are due out on Monday 21 Feb, last month (25 Jan) the Independant reported whispers of strong trading which could prompt upgrades to profit forecasts soon. Will be interesting to see if we see a further increase in share price as news leaks over the next couple of weeks. | riser
28/1/2005 17:30 | It seems that a proportion of Ricardo's recent finance is money spent by SAIC to investigate the potential of its deal with Rover's Powertrain Limited, for example how much of the K-series engine can be reused when trying to build new engines Euro IV emissions compatible. An internet search on some of those words, Rover Shanghai Automotive K-series Ricardo etc ought to throw up details for anybody interested. The UK government might be throwing £100m into the pot to ensure things go ahead. We'll have to see what happens! | crystalclear

26/1/2005 11:49 | Nice Mention in FT - 25 Jan - Ricardo added a further 3.5 per cent to 266½p on continued talk that the engineering group would soon be subject to a takeover bid. The shares have risen 22.5 per cent since the start of the year. | riser |
