10/9/2007 21:50 | Ethanol futures have been collapsing recently according to an article I read today. That aligned to rising corn futures is putting margin pressure on the sector. We will need to see a clean set of accounts which reflect increased production volumes before being able to judge where eps will settle down. | nickcduk

20/8/2007 15:10 | It takes about a MJ of oil out of the ground to create a MJ of ethanol. I think the real figure is you can create 1.1 MJ of ethanol. But ethanol is less dense, than petrol and also has less energy in a given mass of fuel (since the C-O-H bonds represent partially burnt carbon and hydrogen). So the real advantages of ethanol is that we can charge the car driver more for the same mass of fuel (since it takes up more litres of space), and then charge him more again as he'll need yet more fuel fill-ups if it provides less power. So the real secret to ethanol is to hookwink governments into thinking of it as a green fuel and to provide farming subsidies and mandate a certain amount of "renewables". If that can be done (not at the oil companies expense), the oil companies can stretch their reserves a bit and up their profits too. | crystalclear

16/8/2007 20:36 | Soybeans, Corn Fall as Midwest Rains to Boost U.S. Crop Output By Jeff Wilson Aug. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Soybeans fell to a two-month low and corn dropped the most in a month on expectations that rains will improve prospects for the two biggest U.S. crop after two months of dry weather. | jimarilo
16/8/2007 20:32 | Now I hear Pacific Ethanol talking about how favorable the economics are for a refiner to move from the 5.7% minimum to a 10% ethanol blend in its gasoline. If the dollars and cents of "gasohol" are in fact better than I've been led to believe, then I may have to start shifting my opinion about Pacific Ethanol | jimarilo
08/8/2007 16:14 | Not so good.... (i'm long btw) Bad tidings for ethanol This week's USDA report could be a precursor to another runup in corn prices, spelling bad times for an ethanol industry looking to get off the ground. NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Friday's closely watched U.S. Department of Agriculture crop report could serve as a gloomy bellwether for the nation's ethanol industry. Despite projections of a record harvest, many analysts are expecting corn prices to surge over the next several months as farmers give back this year's unprecedented corn plantings of about 90 million acres to wheat and soybeans. | daaan |
