28/6/2007 13:47 | HOPE IN JATROPHA by Brook & Gaurav Bhagat A Small Scale Biodiesel Refinery Editor's Note: Critics of biofuel point out the energy and water necessary to produce the feedstock often can exceed the energy value of the fuel produced. But these studies usually ignore the value of the plant mass as animal feed or fertilizer, once the fuel has been extracted. Another valid concern is the tradeoff between using land to grow food and using land to grow fuel. But what if a plant used to extract biofuel grew on marginal land, that was unable to support crops? What if this plant required minimal water and fertilizer inputs? Jatropha, also known as the Physic Nut, is a plant which may hold such promise. Able to tolerate arid climates, rapidly growing, useful for a variety of products, Jatropha can yield up to two tons of biodiesel fuel per year per hectare. Put another way, Jatropha can yield about 1,000 barrels of oil per year per square mile. In such quantities, Jatropha, like biofuels in general, cannot become a replacement for oil. But Jatropha requires minimal inputs, stablizes or even reverses desertification, and has use for a variety of products after the biofuel is extracted. Moreover, diesel fuel with biodiesel additives causes far less pollution. Biofuel is not the ultimate solution to the energy challenges facing India or the world. But it is part of the solution, especially when it not only stretches finite supplies of conventional fuel, but restores the land it grows on, does not displace more viable agricultural land, and requires minimal water inputs. | roverisback

28/6/2007 11:57 | asparks - i agree palm oil is a disaster for borneo, kalimantan and papua. however even without biofuel, palm oil would still be a huge cash crop as it as many other uses. renova is not responsible for rain forest destruction - to my knowledge they use corn? ethanol isn't a fossil fuel replacement, and biofuels can't replace the world's reliance on petrol and diesel however this doesn't prevent renova being a profit making company with plenty of growth ahead of it. | dasv

28/6/2007 11:42 | Asparks that is of course ur opinion, which isn't shared by the U.S. senate, as per my post a few days ago, nor by the car manufacture's in the U.S. June 22 (Bloomberg) -- Shares of ethanol producers gained today, after the U.S. Senate passed legislation that would quadruple the use of alternative fuels, such as the grain-based additive. The energy bill, approved 65 to 27 last night, calls for 36 billion gallons of renewable fuel use by 2022. Current legislation requires the use of 7.5 billion gallons of renewable fuels by 2012. ``This is a positive to the market and reassurance to producers that there is no reason to have fears about oversupply,'' said Patricia Riet, a trader at Integra US Marketing, LLC in Houston. Shares of Brookings, South Dakota-based VeraSun Energy Corp. rose 65 cents, or 4.9 percent, to $13.89 in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. Pekin, Illinois-based Aventine Renewable Energy Holdings Inc. rose 81 cents, or 5.8 percent, to $14.78 in New York. ``Discretionary blending has increased 12 percent since June 1, and that's quite a significant number'' Riet said, citing an Energy Department report released this week. The report said conventional gasoline blended with ethanol rose from 1.4 million barrels a day in the week ending June 1 to 1.6 million barrels a day in the week ending June 15. | jimarilo

28/6/2007 08:36 | Agree sentiment weighs down on the sector. Figures from companies like BFC don't exactly help, but domestic market in US of ethanol as a fuel additive seems viable and legislation-led. Figures in next results will be far too strong for the nay-sayers to ignore. | dasv
28/6/2007 07:57 | Results positive and show good progress. This should boost the share price BUT market sentiment does not currently favour biofuels so this may hold it back ! | masurenguy

28/6/2007 07:25 | Current trading and prospects Realised ethanol prices have strengthened since the year end, with an average realised price in the current year of $2.45/gal (2007: $2.22) and marketing margins have also improved significantly. Despite USDA estimates for a record corn harvest this year, the corn price remains high, but production margins for our Torrington facility remain above historic averages. Current operating capacity of approximately 25,000 gal/d is scheduled to increase to in excess of 80,000 gal/d when the Heyburn plant becomes fully operational later this year, at which point the economies of scale in our business will become more evident.
