Teaching or nursing is probably more dangerous.

Give a higher London/South East weighting funded by cuts to pay in scotland and Wales

Against, 40% is Crazy, I hope they've been docked a days wages for the last 24hrs.

Its not as though there's no interest in being a fire-fighter, its a sought after job,

23k They should be happy with that.

Yeh. Get rid of him and get some more bent Tories in. At least you knew they were bent and lining their own nest. Can't be totally sure with this tribe though. Causes confusion. We need to know.

these people get our respect because although they dont work a lot they are at the scene when needed.
Go on strike and all that falls apart.
If someone offered to do your job for half the wage would you be happy because then you would be happy beacause you could do a job that paid your worth and at the same time you are not letting the public down.

Against. 40% ridiculous and I suspect 11% reasonable compared to other public sector workers. Should be a career structure though and a bit more for changing working pratices.

Thanx for the honest reply, but, no personal offence, you're clueless mate!

I shan't reply to another post, cause, I don't recognise anything on this thread that passes for TRUE understanding of the world we live in.

The issues are pretty clear. Firemen are paid more than a free market would pay them to do a job. They're refusing to do it, and therefore are risking the lives of the very people who pay them.

I don't begrudge them a wage above what the market would pay, but would certainly begrudge an above-inflation rise unless they're willing to accept the kind of change Bain suggests. Don't tell me he doesn't know the real issues either.

Er, that's an "AGAINST" I reckon.

By the way, does the 2 days, 2 nights, 4 days off system mean that there are as many firemen on duty at 4am on a Wednesday morning as at 4pm on a Friday afternoon? I'm no expert, but, er.....why?

Sack the lot, plenty of ex Kosovoan firemen will be glad of that kind of money for kipping and driving a minicab.

I thought Firemen had vast public support, not the case from what I've read on here. Firemen say they get paid less than policemen, so I think it's fair they get what police get. Then again you could argue you don't need a degree to be a fireman.

I think firemen are just asking for more like the rest of us are, with rocketing house prices the cost of living has risen. 40% a bit excessive in my view but they should get a decent rise.

with 50,000 fireman the increase would cost an extra £400m plus every year who is going to pay for this and all the other increases that follow it, given that we have had our fill of tax rises

the Tory government inherited tax at 45% of GDP in 1979 this was reduced to 37% of GDP during Thatcher`s reign but only by decreasing investment in the public services at one point to a yearly 1.1% increase, less than inflation

the current government reduced government expenditure as a share of GDP to it`s lowest level for at least 40 years, and the public services got worse, much of the budget surplus going in reducing the national debt from 44% to 31% of GDP but the government has steadily been raising tax and it will be 41% of GDP next year

the government intend to raise expenditure to 41% of GDP so understandably the public sector unions want a share of the cake, the press will certainly not be on their side, having indicated that they thought the government`s increased spending on the public services would be "wasted" on pay, they could hardly support them
