Ross, I think that is because the funding issue is paramount in the minds of investors, even ahead of technical progress at the moment. If andd when that is satisfactorily resolved we could see this rise strongly, as has happened recently to lots of other small caps when funding has been resolved. They say they are "agressively" pursuing funding options, whatever that means!

That sounds a very encouraging update. It should help to bolster their case for any financing too.Surprised there's no buying?

From today's final results, this surely is the most significant;
"PolyFuel resolved several key technical
challenges and has now achieved the 5th of 5 key milestones, in its cost-shared
DOE programme, defined as completing a working demonstration prototype of a fuel
cell power supply that achieves the small consumer-acceptable form factor
necessary to integrate with a notebook PC and surpasses the performance of
today's lithium-ion batteries in terms of runtime versus size and weight.
Specifically, PolyFuel achieved this milestone by increasing the power output of
the fuel cell, improving the thermal management of the system, improving the
capacity of the fuel cartridge, and fine tuning the properties of the MEA to
achieve the correct amount of water recycling. The industry-defined performance
target for the fuel cell power supply was 10 hours of runtime at 15 watts
average power in a 500cc integrated package, equating to an energy density of
300 watt-hours per liter. PolyFuel's unit was able to easily surpass this,
delivering 313 watt-hours per liter, at a 30% weight saving compared to any of
today's equivalent lithium-ion battery packs"

PYF fuel cells up 40% on news of funding from USA Govt

asparks .... nice to know that you're showing a positive interest in PYF now .... does this mean you're a holder now?

I think it is down to the fact that the DOE has just thrown $41.9m at the sector with no repayment strings. Basically $40m at the whole abeit small market is going to have an effect across the whole sector.

Secretary Chu Announces $41.9 Million to Spur Growth of Fuel Cell Markets

To expand the use of clean and renewable energy sources and reduce America's dependence on foreign oil, Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced $41.9 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding for fuel cell technology.

PPS - German fuel cell developer also doing well today. UP 40%. AFC another fuel cell co, also up 40%.

Why the sudden interest in fuel cells?

it's a vindication that they are going to be around in the eyes of the US government too - they must be pretty confident of future funding. When that is announced, provided it is in decent size, then we could quickly see a return to 20p in my opinion.

Shows you how mad the market is, they get given free money, more than their market cap and what happend, nada, nix nowt.

I agree about the RNS, that is what it is there for (I have just noticed it, wow 2 days after the DOE annouce it!)

Given their cash position, if they have just been awared $2.5m by the US govt, should there not have been an RNS?

This snuck under my radar but this is one of the things I have been betting on:-

Secretary Chu Announces $41.9 Million to Spur Growth of Fuel Cell Markets
WASHINGTON, DC - To expand the use of clean and renewable energy sources and reduce America's dependence on foreign oil, Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced $41.9 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding for fuel cell technology.

These efforts will accelerate the commercialization and deployment of fuel cells and will create jobs in fuel cell manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and support services. The new funding will improve the potential of fuel cells to provide power in stationary, portable and specialty vehicle applications, while cutting carbon emissions and broadening our nation's clean energy technology portfolio.

"The investments we're making today will help us build a robust fuel cell manufacturing industry in the United States," said Secretary Chu. "Developing and deploying the next generation of fuel cells will not only create jobs – it will help our businesses become more energy efficient and productive. We are laying the foundation for a green energy economy."

The $41.9 million will support immediate deployment of nearly 1,000 fuel cell systems for emergency backup power and material handling applications (e.g., forklifts) that have emerged as key early markets in which fuel cells can compete with conventional power technologies. Additional systems will be used to accelerate the demonstration of stationary fuel cells for combined heat and power in the larger residential and commercial markets.

The increase in manufacturing volume in key early markets will also bring costs down and encourage the growth of a domestic supplier base. A variety of technologies will be developed and deployed, including polymer electrolyte, solid oxide and direct-methanol fuel cells.

The funding includes:

$41.9 million from President Obama's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to fund 13 projects to deploy fuel cells – helping to build a consumer base for U.S. fuel cell manufacturers.
Approximately $72.4 million in cost-share funding from industry participants-for a total of nearly $114.3 million. This cost share demonstrates private sector commitment to developing and deploying these clean, energy efficient technologies.

A detailed, state by state list of awards is below:
(I have Redacted the other winners)

PolyFuel, Inc. (Mountain View, CA)

The objective of this project is to further integrate and miniaturize the components of PolyFuel's portable power system for use in mobile computing, and analyze failure modes to increase durability. Polyfuel will also conduct a design for manufacturability and assembly review to ensure that the systems meet the cost targets for commercialization. $2.5 million

Callum,I agree that the funding is crucial.
I disagree with the ten-bagger scenario however.
From these levels,at 2.5p,I would say 40-100 bag(or higher still) is not out of the question in YEARS to come
( IF they survive and market useful product to all those dozens
of Japanese/Korean OEM's and firms who have expressed interest in Polyfuel's membranes and potential increased run-times from DMFC cartridges which they say are in the final of the 5 stages of progress).

Admittedly it is hard to look ahead to better times with any share, but wow,at these depressed levels, the upside is enormous!

IMO

Well, they key here is whether they have secured funding beyond the $6m they had at end of year. If they announce this, we will see a major rerating of the shares as it will have bought them more time until commercialisation. Pure option money at these levels. Ten bagger quite possible at these levels but an equal risk that they will simply run out of money in a years time. Still hold all my shares but written them off in my head.

Humm, I wonder where the Capital is going to come from (go on Obama you know you want to!)

During the course of 2008 PolyFuel reduced its monthly cash burn rate. The
Company estimates its cash burn rate to be approximately $600,000. The Company
ended the year with approximately $6.6 million in cash and investments. PolyFuel is actively seeking additional capital to complete its technology and product development, build out its manufacturing capability, and achieve commercial introduction of its products.

yes, unionhall - almost cetainly a trading update next week - we haven't had any news since last September so one is long overdue - hopefully something of interest in it, too which may stimulate some turnover in the share. Thinking of buying a few in advance, but my confidence in this one has been shattered so probably won't!
