as this popped up to the top, just wanted to mention the Treo 600. if you need a phone plus palm-based pda, it's glorious. full keyboard that's surprisingly easy to get used to, good size, nice screen, decent camera (in good light), wonderful feel and great applications.

there's rumours of a successor coming in the fall, with an improved screen and integrated bluetooth and possibly more memory, but i've had my 600 for about 6 months and love it :)

Thanks for those phone suggestions.

I'm feeling that what will suit me better is something like the Tosh 800 as it can then replace my Panny laptop for travel. It will be much heavier to carry around than the Rex - but I only ever put it in a jacket pocket.

I like the idea of WiFi as I think that will become more and more useful.

Amazing how the mind can change in such a little time.

I know someone who bought a Blackberry to take to the West coast of the USA and found it did not work.

As I said earlier if I am going to have a PDA that deals with the internet I do want one with the ability to use GRIC over a hotel bedroom phone and that means I must get a PDA with microsoft software I think.

Monday will be shopping day - I am already spending too much time on this!

Have a good weekend.

what about the Blackberry 7230? I have one and love it. Battery lasts about a week and it can be charged from the usb cable which is used for syncronisation. Probably not the most fully functional PDA but better than the rex, big plus points are keyboard, screen, gprs push mail is delivered automaticaly, triband phone. Not so good points no bluetooth or infra red (but this helps the battery life), slightlyu big as a phone but still pretty smal for a pda, not as small as rex.

Mine is from t-mobile but i think others have them now as well.

I only ever used a pda for diary and contacts. By getting a Sony Ericcson P800 (now replaced by the P900)I managed to dispense with the need for a pda altogether. Fair enough it's a bit big for a phone, but at least I now need carry only one piece of kit instead of two. If I am going to be away long enough I also only need carry one charger.

It's more conveninent as I can dial out without needing to look up the number on the pda and dial it into my phone. I just look up the contact and press "send"

Email, web browsing and loads of other stuff is standard and you can get readers for Word and Excel cheaply. I have also got the iTraffic Trafficmaster thingy installed, which is handy sometimes, and also my stockwatch for easy monitoring.

Overnight I have come up with another idea.

I like the Rex because it is easy to carry on a day to day basis and secondly it runs on the same batteries for probably a year (so it is not going to die whilst I am on holiday).

As I often travel overseas with a laptop to collect my e:mails and keep up to date with my share prices (ADVFN web site) etc I was wondering if I could get a PDA that would work sufficiently well to be able to replace the laptop.

Then I would not need to worry about battery capacity as I'd be able to justify taking a charger with me (as the laptop would no longer be part of my luggage).

Presumably most good PDA's have mail retrieval software and web browsers. I like the look of the Palm Tungsten T3 as it can work with a horizontal screen and that must help with web viewing.

For dialling I'll be using hotel phone sockets. Presumably all PDA's have a way of taking a phone lead and plug.

What about diallers? I often use a GRIC dialler which is a Windows based dialler. I think that some PDA's work with a variant of Windows and some have a different operating system. Yes?

Should I thus concentrate on those with Windows as an operating system?

So much to learn. But fun with so many people to pick ideas from.

Having just spend an embarrassing length of time trying to update my Xircom Rex Pro from my Win2000 based Lotus Organiser 97 I must conclude that I need something better supported. I have had it since my Win 95 days and I am sure that Win 2000 has been the killer. So I must move on....

For those not too familiar with the Rex Pro I'd describe it as a large PCMIA card with an LCD screen and some buttons. On it I store my Diary, my Address book and about 80 pages of data.

In theory you can input fresh info on to the Rex. I never do and never need to. I put all the fresh info on to my Organiser on my PC and then re-fresh the Rex from time to time.

The joy of the Rex is that it takes up no room in a pocket. I don't want e:mail, a phone, GPS or anything. I just want the smallest possible PDA type device around.

Any ideas folks?

Rgds

Hooya,

True, most of these devices will do there best to view normal websites but they tend to be very large and slow and can do strange things as they use html which some PDA browsers can't cope with.

Most people use GPRS to surf the web using their PDA so you get charged per Mega Byte which keeps the cost down if using a light weight site such as our PDA website but starts getting expensive when generally surfing the web.
