Well true, but do you use a PDA continuously? Anything with WiFi / Bluetooth / mobile phone capabilities is going to eat the battery, but I find my m505 will go for at least a couple of weeks without needing to recharge -(couple of weeks ~= 10 hours actual use) - less if the backlight is used heavily

Clearly battery useage is a key factor for people like me. I quote one web reviewer:-

"My old Palm III would last anywhere from one to three months on a pair of alkaline AAA batteries. The new T3 has a built in rechargeable Lithium Polymer battery, and battery life can be as low as 2 hours of continuous use. Palm itself suggests recharging on a daily basis if you've got the Bluetooth switched on, and says it should last for five days of typical usage with default brightness settings and no Bluetooth."

Not something you'd want to take abroad for a fortnight's holiday as your emergency source of addresses and phone numbers.

Just as a matter of interest if I do get forced into the PDA camp.

The Palm Tungsten T3 is shown as having five day's battery life.

How long would it run if it was not switched on? Any clues?

Thanks Poo,

I spotted it somewhere yesterday, but no evidence of a UK shipper yet.

I'm used to something the size of a PCMIA card. About the weight of a biscuit.

Depends what you're used to, I suppose. I've gone from Palm III to m505 and find Tungsten very light. Zire is much lighter (though very plasticky, and I suspect, not terribly robust)

My co-director has a Sony Clie. It feels really heavy. Surely this is not the optimum?

For me, it has to be a Palm device - either one of the Tungstens or a Sony Clie. Light, durable, and many times the battery life of a WinCE/Pocket PC device. EasySync will synchronise with Lotus tools - not sure if this is included in the box nowadays.

Having just spend an embarrassing length of time trying to update my Xircom Rex Pro from my Win2000 based Lotus Organiser 97 I must conclude that I need something better supported. I have had it since my Win 95 days and I am sure that Win 2000 has been the killer. So I must move on....

For those not too familiar with the Rex Pro I'd describe it as a large PCMIA card with an LCD screen and some buttons. On it I store my Diary, my Address book and about 80 pages of data.

In theory you can input fresh info on to the Rex. I never do and never need to. I put all the fresh info on to my Organiser on my PC and then re-fresh the Rex from time to time.

The joy of the Rex is that it takes up no room in a pocket. I don't want e:mail, a phone, GPS or anything. I just want the smallest possible PDA type device around.

Any ideas folks?

Rgds

theblackmamba,

Now that is a tough question as I have never tested it (something that I was going to do on the new re-vamp of the system).

I would hazard a guess as yes, but I dont know for sure, it really depends how good the web browser on the Blackberry is.

Hooya,

True, most of these devices will do there best to view normal websites but they tend to be very large and slow and can do strange things as they use html which some PDA browsers can't cope with.

Most people use GPRS to surf the web using their PDA so you get charged per Mega Byte which keeps the cost down if using a light weight site such as our PDA website but starts getting expensive when generally surfing the web.

theblackmamba,

You will need a device that can use a network if you want to get live prices on the move. I have used Vodafone, Orange and O2 and they all seem to work fine.

The site was developed using Pocket PC 2002, but has more recently been enhanced to use other platforms such as Symbian which runs on the Sony P900 so any device with a web browser should work fine with our site.

There are two tarriffs on the PDA site, mobile and mobile plus and both give you live prices

Mobile costs £30 and mobile plus costs £50 (mobile plus gives you live indicies).
