Shares in bookies were lower after the UK Competition & Markets Authority said it is launching an investigation into whether online gambling firms are treating their customers fairly. In particular, the CMA is concerned that players may be losing out as a result of being locked into complex and strict requirements linked to gaming promotions that are difficult to understand and may be unachievable.

FTSE 100-listed Paddy Power Betfair was down 0.3%, while midcap peers Ladbrokes and William Hill were down 1.2% and 0.2%, respectively.

Barclays upgrades Paddy Power Betfair forecasts


Barclays is forecasting that bookmaker Paddy Power Betfair (PPB) will deliver ‘multi-year217; top-line growth.

Barclays analyst Patrick Coffey retained his ‘overweight217; recommendation and target price of 11500p. He upgraded full-year 2016 and full-year 2017 earnings per share estimates by 1% and 3% respectively to reflect the fact that the business can benefit to some degree from the weak pound.

‘We are 10% ahead of company consensus Ebitda [earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation] in full-year 2017,’ he said. ‘We are bullish on PPB’s ability to deliver multi-year top line growth and high underlying operational gearing.

‘We continue to think consensus materially underestimates the operational gearing potential of PPB.’

Crown Resorts Ltd. tumbled 14 percent in Sydney after Chinese authorities detained 18 of its employees, including the head of its international high-roller operations.

Gaming stocks elsewhere were also hurt, with Sands China Ltd. and Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd. both dropping at least 3 percent in Hong Kong. In London, Paddy Power Betfair Plc, which generates more than a quarter of its revenue in Australia, fell 1.2 percent.

(ShareCast News) - Bookmaker Ladbrokes announced on Monday that subsidiaries of both itself and merger partner Gala Coral Group have agreed to sell a total of 359 licensed betting offices to Done Brothers Cash Betting - trading as Betfred - and StanJames Abingdon - trading as Stan James.
The FTSE 250 firm said Betfred will purchase 322 shops for a cash consideration of £55m, and Stan James will purchase 37 shops for a cash consideration of £0.5m.
