The city should have a good hard look at itself as they have massively over reacted wholesale on the vast majority of companies.NTG is a well run company that will get it right and it must only be a matter of time before it recovers.People should remember that this outfit are the best so how are the opposition doing as they will not have the financial backing that this crew have when times are difficult.

should have practised what i preached and stayed long, bit boring though for me, i topped up on some more fast moving penny shares in the hope of a quick bounce, still think this will go further, its still remains a solid outfit imo.

strong day in these. Not sure why. scary being short when debt is 4-5 times market cap, but not too worried at EV/EBIT of nearly ten times.

Anyone got any idea on white van residuals in the last month or so?

Cheers Go ;o)

There may even be days when I'd bet upwards on NTG..

I support West Bromwich Albion. There are some games I expect them to lose and will bet accordingly. That doesn't mean I hold the team in contempt or wish them ill - it just means I dont think they stand a chance that day, in that match. Same with stocks.

o/t Gohunk, if your sinbinned mate has sobered up he should check the door lock. Though if he can't hold his drink he may be out again. I always listen to reasoned pleas.

I too remain short on NTG. Not because of any gloomy assessment of its prospects (it may have a brilliant future as far as I know, and that future might kick in tomorrow or whenever) but because its share price is declining. As are so many others of course.

This isn't a stock in which my downbet is a comfortable one that I can confidently leave in place continuously - it's one in which my downbet stake is small and which I frequently cash in and reopen (a bit like shouting "Bank!" on the Weakest Link show - raking cash off the table whenever it's there to be taken).

The stockmarket is a casino. (Folk can argue that it shouldn't be - but it is). If some players choose to only bet on black and can't bring themselves to ever bet on red, that's their choice. I understand that view. There just happen to be lots of red cards and very few black ones in the pack at present - making it a very quiet time for the black-only players. A situation which will at times reverse of course.

No problem, if it came across as boasting about shorting the stock that was not the intention. I have come across this view on shorting a few times on different boards and I find it interesting to discuss, everybody's strategy is different but I find the option to go short really useful particularly in these dreadful markets at the moment.

As for tan, no missed out on that one ;0, that's a very different situation to the movements on Northgate, real shenanigans going on over there. It now looks very cheap and for some may be worth a punt but for me I think there is easier, less stressful money elsewhere.

Lets hope the markets turn and we can all make money on the upside so shorting is unnecessary but to be honest I would not hold my breath, I feel the economy is only going to get worse.

You were the one that got personal, just looking at your recent posts would suggest you are nursing a few losses, if that's not the case then good for you. If you are honestly telling me that you do not use shorts as part of your investing strategy, then for example how do you hedge your trades during volatile market conditions?

A successful private investor should use every legal tool and technique available to them to extract as much money out of the market as possible, the big boys for their massive bonuses do it so should the PI for themselves and their family. There are no morals in the stockmarket, with every purchase you make you are looking to buy something cheaper that you believe its worth, so your moral line doesn't hold up.

There are times to go long and times to go short and by never getting emotionally attached to any company (which you clearly are) you can make unclouded judgements.

Sadly it looks like I am not going to get any sensible debate about the quality of this company.

Gohunk, your funny and a good investor, wish I was successful like you :) Back to the reason I use this site (to make money!!), anybody see a bottom in this stock, is it just dropping further because of market conditions or is there a serious flaw within this business which can be exploited further?

I agree robson, the business model of Northgate has, over the past year, been supported by 'Gain on Sale' of vehicles which has been artificially high due to restricted supply in new vehicles in 2007 and disposal of previously acquired high quality Arriva fleet through retail channels.

Big issues I see in coming year are
(a)Construction downturn will heavily impact 47% (30k vehicles) Spanish revenue.
(b)Business model biased to LCVs sales impacted by softer 2nd hand LCV market,
(c)Stated Defleet policy which will force 2nd hand LCV prices down even further
(d)Possible decision to age the fleet will compromise quality/reputation
(e)Lower quality = lower rate (and therefore margin) to get high utilisation
(f)Increased maintenance costs on aging fleet will put pressure on cash flow
(g)Reduced vehicle purchases will lower buying power and buying discounts

So reduced 'gain on sales' on LCVs, lower rate potiential and higher maintenance costs which could require them to use loan facility, will increase interest payments and significant impact on profitability

Not an obvious buy in my opinion at this stage...
