Back to my usual 2/7 this week.

So one of the women that's put Rolf Harris in jail took nearly 40 years to decide he groped her when she was 12 and when, in her own words; "My mum was standing less than a foot away from me." So the Mum didn't notice then? Sorry but I struggle with these ancient allegations.

US retail sales were flattered by that odd surge in car sales to just squeak a new record. (Probably loads of preregistering.) +0.2% without autos. Traditional retailers struggled as Ebay and Amazon did well. General merchandise was -0.5% for the month to Dec and -2.8% on the weak December last year. A mixed bag and wilting a bit. So, a weakening trend or people just falling out of love with Christmas (pricing)?

We've just had a snow shower for an hour or so, but the sun is now out and little settled over and above the remnants of last night's fall.

Thanks for the link Aleman, interesting reading. At least my recent bunch of BDEV are already in profit, albeit only +4.3% but that's not bad in a couple of weeks. Would have liked more but I decided to spread the money around a bit, and now I have to decide what to do with the last little bit of cash which is still sitting in the SIPP!

EDIT: I meant the housing link, although the South China Sea article is also interesting!

Sorry, MrP. I was probably a little unclear. I was referring to falls in total house transaction volumes. As far as I know, new-builds are still increasing at a moderate pace. The companies I was referring to showing declining momentum were Countrywide, SIG and one other I forget.

Edit - I went looking for a breakdown of property sales figures thanks to your comment and was shocked to find these figures below. (I've never seen this series of stats before despite monitoring ONS output.) I had been leaning on home.co.uk data which has been showing annual falls of 30-40% in volumes since early summer, which didn't seem completely out of line when compared to comments from estate agents about tightness of supply. The government data below has recent months' volumes mostly down only about 9%. I've been wondering why some housing-related economic and corporate numbers had weakened but had not been much worse. It appears I have been letting home.co.uk data mislead me. Perhaps there is quite a lot of property transactions that avoid estate agents and their activity is less prone to supply and demand variations in the rest of the market. It seems the housing market is only a bit subdued, rather than showing a very sharp slowdown as home.co.uk had led me to think.

Aleman, we probably get a distorted picture of new building around here, as just about every spare piece of land seems to have a current development underway. Maybe it's all part of their campaign to reduce greenhouse gases by making the roads so gridlocked we'll all give up and walk everywhere!

That's an interesting article Aleman. If they really have reduced the overall number of beds then clearly that has to be at least a big part of the problem.

Our little printing issue seems to have been resolved, with the Dutch based printers agreeing to a reprint at minimal cost which is fair enough.

Fewer significant updates today in the UK. MAB were a consumer stock that showed a slight ACCELERATION in like-for-for like. Another 3 housing related stocks all seemed to show a slight slowdown in Q4, in line with housing volumes. Still seems a bit mixed then.

They keep talking about increasing demand being the problem.

More than half of NHS beds have been closed since the 1980s.

Need to upgrade my old iPhone 4S but I begrudge paying loads of money when I only use it as a phone with a little bit of internet browsing and a couple of Apps. Might get a second hand iPhone 6S off Ebay.

Gusting up to 40 mph at East Midlands Airport, where they have light snow.

Bigger flakes here now, temp 1C.

Morning All.

Not sure if that was it, but the snow was very short lived here as usual. By the time we all got home, it had started to clear, and despite a low of 0.5°C last night, there really isn't much sign of it this morning, just a light smattering still on the grass. Mind you, I did notice the light snow covering on the balcony was actually solid ice!

RSA is actually sounding quite promising. I hung on after the failed Zurich bid a while back and they have quietly recovered since, leaving me around 15% up at the moment, plus past dividends.

Soon eased off. Only 1cm or so. Just enough to whiten everything, although the roads will clear quickly. Quite breezy rhough - 20 mph or so?

Morning, the area/trough just arrived here now, more of a sleety mix.

Steady inline update from MANX, with cash flow to support the dividend secure.

In the face of a rising deficit Trump's plan is to cut taxes and raise spending. Go figure.

I think he will find it a little more difficult to walk away from a bankrupt country than a bankrupt company.

-0.4% but had an ex-dividend.

Typically 4C through today but easing so no high as such. No sun but a bright grey damp-feeling dry day.

This might need digesting - a parting gift for Mr Trump?

I'm up +0.183% on teh day today (FTSE100 +0.026%).

Best rises: SMDS +2.4%, then NG. and RIO, both +1.8%.

Worst falls: WMH -1.6%, CLLN -1.5% then BLND and TSCO, both -1.3%.

Raining hard here still. We are going to Tonbridge for lunch tomorrow. I might have to go round the motorway if it looks dodgy.

MrP, I'm not a liker of tidal lagoons nor barrages. The results of the Rance barrage in Brittany showed that much less power is generated than expected. I prefer the idea of tidal flow turbines, like they are trying out in the Pentland Firth, which don't disturb the tidal flow to any great extent, and there is a lot less effect on the environment.
