Can I ask your advice. In September 2008 this share was £5.59. Are there rights issues etc that need to be taken into account.

Know such highs are not feasable in the short/medium term but interested whether even possible.

Not really bothered about investment advice as I tend to make my own mind up but your knowledge would be appreciated.

Good to see this share doing well considering the poor results, sharply rising debt levels and stagnant outlook. The company doesn't seem to have learned its lesson from last time regarding the debt problem. Sadly, at some future time they are likely to find themselves in deep doodoo again, but for the time being the market doesn't seem too worried.

Must be very highly operationally geared, net debt almost matching mkt cap., is that really a comfortable level!

Cheshire

Pity that they can't run an efficient bus service in the West Midlands.

For my 10 minute service, I now advise taking a tent and overnight refreshments, plus binoculars to search the horizon. Most travellers have forgotten what they look like.

Shore Capital maintained its "buy" recommendation on coach operator National Express (NEX) after the company released an encouraging pre-closing trading update. The broker was impressed with the 3% year-on-year increase in both Spanish and North American revenues, boosted by a recovery in the schoolbus business and other contract wins. Overall, the broker believes that the group's financial position is strong and that the company is in a good position in terms of cash generation. The shares grew by 7.7p to 187.9p.

They are hardly significant contract wins, 42 transit vehicles in USA, 27 urban buses in Spain.

It seems as though Dean Finch is under growing pressure to release some positive news regarding the groups future growth prospects/plans. The market is still looking for alternatives streams to replace the revenue/profits lost from when NEG handed over the NX East Anglia rail franchise to Abellio

Yes the rights issue was in 2009 - and you were quoting figures going back to 2007 ?

NEX is clearly in difficult markets but imv the new management are making a decent fist of things and I'd sooner be a buyer of NEX at these levels than SGC.

Elliott international's investment track record isn't exactly shabby either, although upping their stake a couple of weeks before the ims wasn't the best of timing - their long tern track record is excellent.

The rights issue was in 2009. It doesn't explain the forecast sharp falls in eps for the next 2 years after 2011. Likewise with revenue. I'm not sure that NEX hasn't still got chronic management issues after the Greater Anglia franchise debacle, although the performane in Spain isn't too bad all things considered. The marker certainly appears to be giving NEX the thumbs-down in no uncertain terms.

Would this dip in the share price have anything to do with the hurricane over in USA?

EPS comparisons with previous years would need to take in to account the rights issue.

The shares at these levels look attractive on income grounds with the lowest eps forecast for next year at around 22 with a dividend of 10 to 10.5 p

Could become a takeover target again if this kind of share price performance persists

I don't think the share price will be going anywhere fast until the Spanish government ask for a bailout or signs of an improvement in the Spanish economy. Citigroup/Barclays/Panmore Gordon & Santo Investment Bank today have all cut their price targets to between 195p-221p max 20% upside.

The share price is unlikely to recover to the 240p+ mark until NEX either win a substantial new UK rail franchise or make a sizeable acquisition that will replace the profit lost from the East Anglia franchise

Last time the share price bottomed at 175-180p on concerns over ALSA's performance / the state of the Spanish economy, it has done the same again today i.e. double bottom. The 175-180p range is currently providing support; today's price action seems a complete over reaction to what I assume was stated under the paragraph about Spain seeing a slowdown in Intercity Business etc. ALSA accounts for around a third of group operating profits, with another third coming from US school buses and the remaining third from the UK bus/coach & rail businesses. Any slowdown in Spain certainly doesn't warrant a 12-13% fall in a day, it's nothing new. I think the last time NEX dropped so much in a day was back in 2009 when it was strangled under £1 Billion+ / handed back the keys to the ECML franchise etc.

If NX ever reaches a £1 I'll be filling my boots......
