Leading neighbourhood retailer, McColls, have been awarded the 2014 Energy Efficiency Award by Lytham based energy consultancy, BIU. This annual award is given to the BIU customer who has the highest reduction in energy consumption, year on year.

McColl's

With around half of its estate being made up of convenience stores, McColl's (LSE: MCLS) seems to be well positioned to benefit from continued growth in the segment. That's evidenced by earnings growth forecasts for the current year and for next year, when McColl's is expected to increase its bottom line by 7% and 8% respectively, which is slightly ahead of the wider market's forecast growth rate.

Despite this, McColl's trades on a very low valuation.

For example, it has a P/E ratio of just 9.8 and this highlights just how much scope there is for an upward adjustment to its rating. Furthermore, a dividend yield of 6.2% is not only hugely impressive, but is well-covered by profit at 1.7 times and, with dividends per share forecast to rise by 8.3% next year, could be as much as 6.7% in 2016.

So, with a dirt cheap share price, strong earnings growth potential, as well as a top notch yield, McColl's could prove to be a stock worth holding in 2015.

McColl’s
James Lancaster, the founder of the newsagent and convenience chain has retail in his blood. He is a McColl’s lifer having set the business up in 1973 and grown it to a chain of 1,276 outlets.

The convenience sector is forecast to grow from £35.6billion in 2013 to £46.2billion in 2018, faster than the overall growth of the UK grocery market. It also represents 21 per cent of the total UK grocery market. In December Lancaster said underlying fourth-quarter sales were down 1 per cent but ahead 0.7 per cent for the year.

The attraction of the firm is the management and its focus on what it has been doing for years.

The shares floated at 191p but have sunk to 183.50p as they find their level.

McColls newsagents to pay £225k following violent robberies

National newsagents and convenience store Martin McColl Ltd was fined £150,000 after admitting failing to protect staff members following a series of shop robberies in Wirral. This was not the first case of its kind for the newsagents, which was prosecuted in August 2010 after a store manager was assaulted.

Liverpool Crown Court heard how the newsagents, now known as McColl’s Retail Group PLC which has 12,000 staff across the UK, had fallen “significantly below the standards required” in protecting staff from the risk of harm.
