Telegraph:

'Can convenience stores ever be good value?'

Many shoppers believe the lack of special offers and cut-price value ranges make convenience stores more expensive. Richard Evans investigates
I'm a lazy shopper. The thought of an hour-long weekly shopping trip fills me with dread the long drive, the hunt for a space in a giant car park, battling with my trolley through hundreds of other shoppers, the long queues at the checkout ...

I prefer shops whose car parks have room for half a dozen vehicles and where you'll encounter just a handful of customers and a couple of staff.
That's right: I shop at convenience stores.

Nowadays these shops seem to be everywhere. We now spend £51bn a year in them, a 25pc rise in just five years, according to Michael Macdonald of Verdict, the retail analyst.

"We expect to see further growth in convenience stores," Mr Macdonald said. "Morrisons, for example, is concentrating all its new store openings in this area. Asda is not really in this market yet, but I expect it to be soon.

Over 1 million traded again today , nearly all sells. Directors are locked in for twelve months but I suppose other staff can still unload.

How do they treat their staff?

A simple Google search on McColl's and the 'news' tab suggests working for them might be hazardous.
