Pottsy,

It looks like falling input costs are a negative for MCB:

McBride hit by spring cleaning campaign

Shares in McBride plunged more than 15 per cent on Thursday after the maker of household products warned that a prolonged spring cleaning promotional campaign in British stores would dent sales and profits.

The warning is at odds with the buoyant picture of private label growth painted by UK supermarkets, virtually all of whom singled out their own label products as increasing sales at a rapid clip. However, supermarlkets' growth includes food, whereas McBride is focused on household products and personal care.

McBride warned that full-year revenues would be about 3 per cent lower than anticipated due to weaker consumer demand in western Europe and a "very recent, unusually strong and prolonged" period of promotions from branded manufacturers.

It is understood that Procter & Gamble has been especially aggressive – prompting consumers, faced with similarly-priced own label and branded washing up liquids and detergents, to buy the branded version.

This is a particular blow for McBride, which has high operational gearing thanks to heavy fixed costs. Analysts were quick to downgrade their forecasts for this year and next.

Panmure Gordon calculates that a 3 per cent reduction in sales, or £24m, reduces operating profits by 17 per cent to an estimated £26m this financial year. It forecasts earnings per share falling 20 per cent this year and 16 per cent next year – explaining the big slide in the share price.

Damian McNeela, analyst at Panmure Gordon, said branded manufacturers were benefiting from easier input inflation this year, and using that cushion to claw back market share from private labels, sacrificing margin in the process.

"In 2010 all branded players were very aggressive, so this may indicate a return to those levels," he said. "Input inflation is easier, so they have got a little more margin to play with."

In its trading update on Thursday, McBride said revenue on a constant currency basis for the year to March 20 was 6 per cent lower than the prior year. It said "decisive action" was being taken to accelerate existing cost reduction plans.

Looking at the raw material costs for mcb palm oil, coconut oil and crude for plastics have fallen dramatically over the past year, surely this should be in their favour. Is it simply a case of supermarkets aggressively marketing premium brands that are driving profits down ?
Don't own these at the moment but considering at these prices ?

In to this one today at 1.38 level. I can't help thinking that one the 1.40 level goes, the share price will move up sharply. Could go the other way of course! viz. the 'Brucie effect'.

Look like a very promising bowl forming here, with 140 a key level. Surprised not to see CR here already. The share price appears to have capitulated in June, only to find support at the powerful £ level. So often the case with strongly rebounding shares. I say this without any ref. to FA, nor yet, any position, so case of DYOR, though i notice it has been on my watch list for some weeks!

RE dividend. Why complicate things with the 'B shares' offer and instigate correspondence (costing time and money) with,in my case, a nominee company in order to get the dividend or get an interest rate of circa 0.4%/annum on uncollected dividends?

A relatively small downward adjustment in an expected upward figure. But embarrassing nevertheless.

EPS down 75% and the next day Swallowfield (SWL) cosmetics and aerosols EPS up 17%. They are obviously suffering same cost pressures. Does MCB have an explanation?

Enia, don't believe there is another agenda behind this appointment. Rights issue not really needed, although it's been a tough year for manufacturers.

If this takes a nosedive on Tuesday am, get some more bagged!
