redart, I suspect it will - from memory (so could well be wrong) I think the reduced pension contri should add £8m to bottom line - but could be dreaming this.

Small beer in the context of the debt of course (no pun intended) but it's a step in the right direction

Debt, debt, debt. Yes I wish they could pay some down.

At 1.8 times the divi has still not hit the goal of 2x cover, but they don't trumpet that do they.

one to tuck away.

the biggest plus i saw in the results from what i remember is that the pension contribution is halved - that will make a material difference to their results, and hopefully they can pay down more debt.

moving into profit and the thwaites deal settling in all points towards good things to come.

I'm happy to hold and add a few more on weakness.

Go on, then!

btw, did you see GNK's results yesterday? Whilst I think GNK is a better-managed and more dynamic company than MARS, it did the sector no harm.

Yeah but if it was a spelling mistake you'd not have done it several times!

Was merely querying what you meant.

Mars is superb :)

Always been a big fan.

Thanks fang but if I wanted a spell check I'd put one in my toolbar the odd spelling mistakes never interfered with my ability to pick winners like Mars

If you check janekane's earlier posts you'll see they are just a common-and-garden ramper. My guess is they want another 1% or so before cashing out.

I've held this share for ages - since Wolverhampton & Dudley days - but I would put the chances of the share price doubling over the next 12 months at zero (0)!

I think it's an old school marking symbol IE 1A = good 1B not so good

However this has now after buying another's tranche become 50% of my portfolio
Great company with great potential to double the share price over the next 12 months and giving a great near 4% divi
Reducing %wise as the share price grows

Strong buy

Marston’s could return 26% over two years -

Trading for 2016 at pub retailer Marston’s (MARS) has started well and a 26% equity return over the next two years is possible.

Numis analyst Douglas Jack retained his ‘add’ recommendation and target price of 180p on the shares, which rose 6% to 169p yesterday.

‘In 2015, profit before tax was up 10% to £91.5 million versus our forecast of £90.9 million. As a result, profit before tax rose by 15% in H2. Supported by trading starting well in early 2016, we are holding our 2016 estimated forecasts on which basis we expect cashflow to be neutral and net debt/earnings to fall by 0.3x, despite the progressive dividend and strong expansion plans,’ he said.

‘As H2 2015’s 15% increase in profit before tax indicates, Marston’s is generating strong organic growth. Even on estimates of profit before growth slowing to 7% per annum, we estimate that earnings growth/dividends should drive a 26% equity return over the next two years if the 10x enterprise value/earnings rating holds.’

this is just a place to park your money. I'm up 1% in 6 months which I suppose is considerably better than a savings accounts.
Not much risk premia though.

It's hard to see by whom. I suppose there could be synergies from a merger with GNK but I imagine there would be competition concerns, even if the two managements could agree who would be top dog. It would be ironic if the destruction of the great national brewery/pub companies by the 1989 Beer Orders and susbsequent legislation resulted in.....a national brewery/pubco controlling most ale brands and a substantial number of pubs. Talk about going full circle!
