next set of results will show that the corporate spin doesn't come through into trading...."our entrepreneurial culture helped develop the order by text message system"....the new management of Majestic are obviously in love with themselves...

0929 GMT Majestic Wine's appointment of John Colley as head of its store estate should provide enhanced confidence to the retailer's strategy, says Liberum. Adds Mr. Colley's credentials complement the skill set of the existing Majestic management. Mr. Colley has over 20 years of senior retail experience including Praxis, B&Q and Screwfix. Liberum expects the appointment to provide Majestic CEO greater flexibility in improving store performance and continue growth in Naked Wines. Majestic shares traded 0.2% higher at 366P

A newly created post of MD at Majestic so Gormley can concentrate on Naked Wines because he likes that bit. No reassuring words in that RNS. Speculation fairly pointless now. We will see how bad, or good, things really are in November.

A good article on Majestic in The Telegraph earlier this week.

"I wrote a few weeks ago about changes afoot at Majestic since its acquisition of Naked Wine and the installation of Naked’s Rowan Gormley as CEO of both; and this is one sign that things are already moving. Announced in the summer: an order-by-text service for Naked. Last week, Majestic launched its first, small range of own-label wines with an email to customers that, like the “No need to ask” sign in Mayfair, uses the same perky, casual language that attracted so many fans to Naked"

"For the past two or three years it has been by some margin the best large-scale retailer at which to shop (as opposed to click) for everyday wines. I have written this before and, if anything, the gulf has only widened since: no other national operator with actual shops has such a broad range of good quality and good value wines at under a tenner."

I did lose the will to continue reading at the point it says "...which has hints of button mushrooms...".

The self service wine tasting is an interesting idea. You can even go inside the shop to see it on Google Maps.

I may take a walk over after work.

goliard - But can you taste wine, get expert advice and the wide range Majestic has at Aldi and Lidl?

There is a good reason people go to Majestic. They're a specialist.

I agree re Naked Wines, but it isn't making any money and nobody knows what they offer until you actively look for it.

On Majestic, they have huge competition from the big supermarkets and also from Lidl and Aldi and independent wine shops. This isn't a new problem for them.

If they are then the other retailers are too, so the competition remains. Still falling at quite a rapid rate, but I think there is more to come.

Will Majestic be benefitting from the strong pound and the weak Euro? Cant think that English Wine will make up much of their stock.

Hmm...

20,000 shares at around £3.75 (choosing a round number for simple mental arithmetic) are worth about £75k. If that's 0.0003% of the company, then 0.0001% of it is worth about £25k. And since 0.0001% is a millionth, that implies that Majestic's market cap is about £25b... I think not!

Or more briefly, whoever is in charge of releasing RNSes at Majestic doesn't seem to understand percentages...

There is the break below the 390p support line. Not much support now until about 300p from a technical perspective and likewise the fundamentals don't provide support either.

Becoming more reliant on Internet style ratings now.

Keeping my short from 450p open with no target price to close.

take the growth of Alid, Lidl, convenience supermarkets, online only such as Ocado and where does that leave Majestic? Naked Wines could easily be a fad.

I think the shares of Majestic Wine have a certain amount of hype value on the basis that the new CEO is a "genius" and that Naked Wines will turn things around. I'm not so sure on either and except some medium-term disappointment for investors.

Restoring growth at Majestic Wine will take longer than expected, says Panmure Gordon, and will be costly and uncertain. The brokerage remains unconvinced over the U.K. wine retailer’s GBP70M deal to acquire Naked Wines. Says the deal doesn’t appear to be as synergy-rich as originally anticipated, as fierce competition and shifting wine retail industry is buffeting growth restoration, amid continuing pressure on sales and margins. Reiterates a sell rating and 320p target price.
