18/11/2008 13:43 | notanewmember - "doing up you house adds value" - means painting and decorating to keep the house in good condition. Usually, putting in a £10,000 kitchen may only increase the value of said house by £5,000 etc. Therefore one makes a 50% loss on ones investment in a new kitchen. At this moment of time, unless absolutly necessary, buying a new sofa is a complete and utter waste of time and more so money. | loganair
18/11/2008 10:22 | But but... there was a programme on the BBC this morning that "doing up you house adds value" "Spend £27K, house increases by £50K over the control house." aND ANOTHER SPENT £95k. Therefore opinion spending money makes you money - this now crystalises into fact, because the TV said so? Spend £200 on a leather sofa, your house increases by £5K instant ROI. Now go to the bank and extract the equity and repeat process. I'll be a millionaire! | notanewmember

11/11/2008 17:31 | Agreed, sales in the industry are not as bad as many would have you believe, but it is that time of the year where they all have a little rush on stock for xmas delivery!!!!!! I see even SCS are advertising on telly again!! | trojan
11/11/2008 14:31 | I don't have any inside knowledge at Land of Leather but my wife works at DFS. They were really busy last weekend and sales were excellent. They were dead in Sept / Oct though. Probably everyone sitting listening to the BBC. There has to be more casualty's in this sector before a turnaround. Land of Leather would be top of my list as any recovery will be a while off yet. But those who survive will come out stronger IMHO. | the big fella
11/11/2008 14:31 | Strangely, I think these might now be relatively OK. They have cleared they debt and have reduced costs significantly, at the current mkt cap I see them as an 'option money' punt. Last I heard-a week or so ago- they were trading to budget. They have been destroyed, if they survive they are cheap. | square1

11/11/2008 13:18 | terminal. Shares in sofa chain Land of Leather plunge 24 percent after the British Retail Consortium says last month's sales of furniture and related goods fell at their fastest rate for eight years, while overall British retail sales drop for a fifth straight month, coming in 2.2 percent lower than in October 2007. "Persisting housing market weakness and low consumer confidence continued to hit DIY sales as larger DIY projects were adversely impacted by the unstable economic environment. The squeeze on discretionary spending continued as financial uncertainty fed through into consumer behaviour -- the Christmas outlook remains bleak," says Investec's Natalia Marisova. | still waiting
