Just screening for stocks. LTHM cropped up, a quality family owned company that screams quality. Amazing that from mid 2007 to beginning of 2009 it lost 2 thirds of its value. During this period it was still increasing turnover, paying a decent dividend, making decent profits and had a really good book value. You don't see many quality companies like this listed on AIM in my opinion.

It was McAlpine's stake then, looked like that on Friday.

If you're going to sell a large stake you've either got to work it (which would take an age with LTHM and have been a drag on the price for ages) or take a discount and get them sold - if there isn't a ready buyer for that size a piece in the mkt imo.

I'd sooner the latter - LTHM are very illiquid and you're hadly going to get the takers trying to make a quick turn on the stock imo. More like a few buyers buy on the dip, the price firms and the mkt gets the message these are long term holders imo.

All imo

Not really given the size of the stake and the liquidity of the free float.

If the placing was with institutions at £5 you can bet that the share price will drop to around that price until the loose holders are shaken out. The institutions can never resist a quick profit when it's handed to them on a plate!

As mentioned by CR:-

Holdings in Company

Director's Shareholding

James Latham announces that Northland Capital Partners Limited, the Company's broker, has arranged a placing ("the Placing") of the Company's shares held by Sir Robert McAlpine Enterprises Limited ("SRMEL"). Following the Placing, the Company has been notified by SRMEL that it is no longer a shareholder in James Latham. The shares were placed at GBP5.00 each with new and existing shareholders.

Commenting on the change in the share register, Peter Latham, Chairman of James Latham, said: "the McAlpine family has been a strong and valuable supporter of the Company over many years and in their place we are pleased to welcome a number of institutional investors onto the share register."

The Company has been notified that Meryl Bushell, a non-executive director of James Latham, purchased 5,000 shares in the Placing. Mrs Bushell now holds 9,400 ordinary shares of 25p each in the Company representing 0.05 per cent. of the total voting rights.

This will make a few of you smile....I came across James Latham nearly eleven years ago and here is a piece of research I put on the Motley Fool in mid 2004....I still remain a shareholder as this is a quality long term investment.

A bid would be a shame at this point in the market too imo - the construction sector is only just starting to pick up - far more to play for over a couple of years just from the strengthening of the sector imo.

Agreed davidosh I think a bid highly unlikely and a successful bid even more unlikely, as you say they would not want to lose their independenceand and are extremely proud of the Latham name.

From memory I think the Latham directors and family members have upwards of 25% of the shares and I was once told there were well in excess of 100 Latham names on the share register whether direct or through marriage so I cannot see a bid unless the board were in total agreement. This has been a family timber merchant for hundreds of years so will not let that independence and name disappear lightly IMO.

International Plywood already have 4.9% - 11th fastest growing co in the UK apparently - page 8.

Would they make a bid?

Huge turnover for this share on Friday. It must surely trigger at least one RNS. It could be a curtain raiser for a bid but I'm not convinced that this would be well received by the family. In any event, we look be in for an interesting New Year as far as this company is concerned.

Looks like someone's taken Sir Robert McAlpine's stake imo.

About 7%.

Pre-cursor to a bid?

Just speculating - "I know nothing, I am from Barcelona" :-)

Some chunky looking trades changing hands just now. All at £5. Some kind of cross/shuffling of stakes internally for tax reasons? Will be interesting to see if there are any stake announcements.
