Nicely explained with IQE and MACOM involvement : are all aware that electronics is continually shrinking and more and more functionality is being squeezed in to an ever decreasing space. However as electronic devices are not 100% efficient, this also means that the heat generated due to losses in the devices is also dissipated in an ever decreasing area. In some instances, the power density in some modern electronic devices is as high as that on the surface of the sun. Clearly if this heat is not removed the devices would simply melt and fail. The cooling requirements for modern electronics are therefore very extreme and are often the limiting factor in how well a device can perform even if the fundamental materials properties could allow higher performance. The ability of a material to conduct heat away from the hot part of a device is described by its thermal conductivity. Diamond has a thermal conductivity of 2000W/mK, five times larger than that of copper and the highest of any material making it the ideal material to remove heat from electronic devices. Incorporating diamond heat spreaders in to semiconductor systems is very challenging though as it has very different mechanical and structural properties to most semiconductors. One of the most promising new semiconductor materials is Gallium Nitride (GaN). Because of its wide band gap and the ease with which electrons can move through it, GaN offer the promise of a new generation of higher power, higher efficiency and smaller electronics. GaN device technology has now reached a point where removing heat is a key limiting factor in device performance and reliability. In our new project we will be working with a group of world leading universities (Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Birmingham) and companies (IQE, Element6, MACOM, Onsemi, Airbus, ESA, Selex) to develop methods to incorporate diamond in to the heart of GaN transistors. This will allow the power density in GaN devices to be increased by up to a factor of 6 over the current state of the art and will be key to enabling the next generation of radars and the development future mobile phone networks at 5G and beyond.http://www.gan.msm.cam.ac.uk/projects

I heard that the winter olympics (Feb 2018 S Korea) is the place where some serious 5G showboating is likely to occur - less than a year away now too

Sweenoid, I've only learned of, and from, your contributions here very recently, but would like to thank you for what seem to be balanced and knowledgeable contributions. There seems little doubt that the company and it's share price have a very good long term prospects. As always, it's the short term timing and rate of progress which we can never be sure of.

I've bought in ahead of the annual results and am prepared to be patient.

Good posts guys.Toffee always wondered why you were called that (thick or what)One of your guys hugged me in a pub on the last game of the season - he was nearly in tears for us .... never mind me when the tenor was on ! Over 40 years of rubbish and then that !How things change when players get above themselves ehApologies for off topic - hopefully in 5 yrs or so we'll all be very happy with this investment

just a reminder of next weeks CS conference , I am hoping that this will be the venue and the 'time' for the formal arrangement/ partnership between Macom and IQE to be announced for all things GAN on silicon. Maybe I will be wrong, wont be the 1st time ;-), but the Macom CEO recently said that they were within 'spitting distance' of an announcement about their wafer partner.

Even if no announcement is made the 2 day conference will be a massive mine of information and news on the Compound Semiconductor world, as you will see if you open the agenda. IQE's CEO Drew Nelson is chairing the meeting and I believe all the top 'players' of IQE will be present.

Sold out of product due to high demand!

Oclaro is seeing strong demand for datacenter interconnect applications. The demand is for analog coherent optics [ACO] from traditional equipment suppliers and new website 2.0 customers. The company expects strong demand for this to continue in 2017.

The company also expects 2017 to be the year that 100G takes off for interconnection within the datacenter. Oclaro has been sold out of its data center products because of such high demand. Oclaro expects the market to remain tight for at least 2017. This strong demand will help drive revenue growth for the company, perhaps allowing Oclaro to exceed its revenue estimates. The stock is likely to respond positively to the strong double-digit revenue growth that Oclaro will achieve this year and beyond.

I hope the translation from Chinese to English works, this is a very in depth article on 3D sensor tech and the players within. IQE are mentioned. Not had time to read through. But thought I would post it before I lose the link.

Edit
When using Chrome browser it asks to translate, but with native android browser it didn't. Not sure everyone will be able to read

Yump:

"Its no good just banging on about growth markets and new tech. if you can't split the actual business revenue into likely growth paths and timings"

I doubt very much whether ARM might have been able to do exactly that in a convincing manner before the advent of the iphone and the resultant super expansion in so-called smart technology. Like them (ARM) IQE is simply a supplier to technology conceived and developed by other folk. However the key thing is that such companies have a firm grasp of the the trends, direction of travel etc in which the technology is moving. This is manifestly the case with IQE. Nobody can predict with any accuracy what the actual global market for compound semiconductor materials will be in 3 or 5 years' time; the incredible pace of change in the technology renders forecasting and revenue projections a game for the foolhardy/naive. But in fairness to IQE's CEO he has spoken publicly and knowledgeably about the anticipated acceleration of demand for CS materials over the next few years, and how the company is nicely poised to benefit in terms of the quality of its products and its ability to rapidly scale up production as necessary.

As an investor all you are realistically able to do is research the business, weigh up the probabilities of success and put down your money. If I was as uncomfortable with this business as you seem to be I'd have picked up my marbles and taken a walk ages ago.

Well for the record I don't think sweenoid is a stooge or a muppet and I haven't filtered.

But I do think he is incapable of distilling all the tech. information he knows, into a set of critical things to monitor, to track whether IQE profits are likely to grow.

Its no good just banging on about growth markets and new tech. if you can't split the actual business revenue into likely growth paths and timings.

He's allowed to post whatever, of course but I don't like the lecturing approach.

But I'm sure 1/2 hour of clear thought could produce something invaluable that could be put in the header for everyone to see. Such as, which product lines are ultimately replacement and which are brand new markets.

'Read my extensive posts' is the answer.

Taffy100- I have already made a comment about the Skyworks solutions -so the answer is yes

COMMENT -I have muppets like Shanieboy and Yump on my filter- but I can tell by responses that he is once again suggesting I am a company stooge as are 'others'

IT ain't funny, its pathetic and ANY comments about me -good or bad are incredibly boring to most readers, I appreciate the support but let's stick to IQE shall we. At least 3 posters on this bb have met me personally ( at IMG AGM's). FOR THE VERY LAST TIME, I am a retired doctor and am currently a student of history ( amongst other things).

Happy St David's day
