Here's a bit of research for you. Over the weekend I met up with some family members I haven't seen for a while, one being my very beautiful cousin! Whilst chatting with her I noticed her beautiful perfectly white teeth and couldn't help commenting on them! She proceeded to tell me all the girls and even the boys are now having this treatment done! She told me what the treatment entailed and the dentist used a 'philips zoom' whitening system that uses light to whiten your teeth!........well you could have knocked me over with a feather realising that IQE's wafers are used by Philips photonics for this very application! When IQE' shares reach £1 I might even get mine done! Lol

The very fact they are moving into "other" new markets will lead to growth in itself, with the business underpinned with its existing wireless revenue, and already growing quickly Photonics. Agree at this point it's difficult to quantify how much new markets will bring to the table, but that isn't a negative. It does make this a very interesting stock though.

Desperate Dan
Well now you've gone and mentioned my name... ;-)

Actually nothing more to say. I'm just going to go by results, as the relationships between IQE's likely profits and the final markets contain too many variables to extract anything meaningful in the way of a guess at future growth. I just hope that although the big share of wireless has not led to constant double digit growth, a similar big share of some of the other markets will turn out differently.

Sweenoid et al (my catchphrase Dexter5....get your own, lol)I think the explanation about binary code and 1 and 0 (on or off switches) in tonsils post is very good. It explains that silicon can no longer cope with the job in hand at this level and a new material needs to be used, I.e. Compound semiconductors! Eventually these will reach the end of their life like silicon also! Nothing is faster than the speed of light( except superman and the starship enterprise), so in the future computer processors and everything inside, now made of copper wires, will need to be able to run optically but than will be long after I'm pushing up the daisies, lol.

just a quick point

trying to understand complicated technology is sometimes self-defeating, bewildering and simply confusing.

although I use some technical terms because that is the fundamental foundation of this investment, I like to clarify my investment here by simplifying it.

as such and over simplistically, IQE make various flavours of compound semiconductor wafers ( they all have long names but think along the lines of gallium, indium, germanium). Thes wafers are bought by a load of companies most people have never heard of , because they are a 'middle-man) like Skyworks, Macom, Qorvo and Oclaro- hence the charts above) that make 'chips' for companies we have all heard about :-) Apple and Samsung etc etc etc

so what? and why cant we stay with boring , cheap old silicon.

well things progress and as they do they become more complicated, energy use becomes critical and efficiency is king, CS materials just do things better than silicon and are now approaching a critical point where they are approaching the cost of silicon in some applications such as RF power, power amplification etc

The KEY to whether IQE succeeds is in the markets that it supplies now and more importantly in the future, this is what unlocks investor return and earns us the £££;£. Well IQE are in a sweet-spot as they provide for markets that are presently or shortly will undergo exponential rates of growth - photonics, solar, RF power etc etc. AS WELL as increasing the utilization in our major business of wireless by offering alternatives that CS are not used for at the moment like filters (huge revenue potential waiting to be cracked :-) )

do we have competition - yes. Are they any good - yes, BUT we are the ONLY CS producer that covers 6 markets, we have the biggest OEM customers and more importantly we have the capacity to ramp up production because we have more active sites around the world - UK, Singapore Taiwan and the US than anyone else has.

We are also working with the biggest and best companies but cant talk about it because of NDA (non disclosure agreements) and have a Government funded (UK and Wales) compound semiconductor centre sitting 5 miles away from HQ providing bright new graduates and that we provide the equipment for with large resulting license fees :-)

Don't get lost in the complicated technological terms - think markets-HUGE , think sectors, think of the digital world where now and in the future ALL new technologies and uses WILL HAVE TO INCLUDE CS materials, for starters think of the big buzz words for the new upcoming Apple and Samsung phones - VR and AR - virtual and augmented reality, think super-fast fibre broadband , think of ADAS in cars and autonomous driving and sensors etc etc etc and you start to taste the potential of IQE

:-)

dont know how to post the picture of the IP spread in this web article but it seems Nano's IP in QDs is not as good as i once thought. Not sure how the kodak stuff supplements it - any tech gurus out there?

Dexter - the content of my deleted post was in no way aimed at you,

The node size is all important, sub 10nm and silicon has had its day, it then simply has to be replaced by CS , it's going to be CS on silicon because of the price and that's why IQE's acquisition of the cREO technology last year ( for a song) is so important. As in all things technology , simply sticking CS layers on a silicon wafer to add to its functionality doesn't work without major issues, IQE with a cREO ( rare earth oxide) layer in-between the silicon and CS prevents the 'shorting' issues

March 7th and 8 th are the days to look for news

Sween thanks for removing original comment.
Cannot say interest in iqe will be more on monday
But rest is factual.Letter being issued Sunday.
Check exhibitors for LTE phone.
Also Intel restarting 7nm chip factory Announced at white house
Intel have also stated that 7nm chips will have to be on Comp.Semi wafers

Yump et al

We should start to generate significant interest from Monday onwards. The MWC opens on
Monday AND bloomberg just had a news item that said all the major telcos and equipment
suppliers asked for 5G to be implemented as soon as possible in a joint letter.
LTE are also showing a mobile phone for release which is 5G enabled
