I too use AOL and have had no problems with the service. I spend about 10hrs a day on-line and have never been bumped off, I believe it costs £15.99 per month and you can use it on any phone line.

I'm hacked off with BT for this - so soon after introducing 12hrs - but what can you do??

Guess that they want heavy users to take out multiple subscriptions!!

Take out 5 and you can surf Anytime.

BT have just announced that their BT Anytime service is anything but anytime.

From 24hours to 12 hours and now 5 hours from 1 November.

Can anyone recommend a back up ISP similar to Anytime (which can be used away from your home telephone line) (With Freeserve Anytime you have to nominate a telephone number).

Hiya,
N Scotland - between Inverness and Aberdeen. Spain in 6 weeks eh? which bit? We have a tiny holiday place s of Alicante that I tried to get a phone into during a 2 week visit in July... we'll be back to repeat the performance in October.
Years (10?) ago I was a Compuserve user, I stopped soon after AOL grabbed them... a year back I tried AOL and surprised the chap I called to cancel the trial, he thought 27 minutes (I think it was) had been a rather quick decision, but I found the front end really annoying. He agreed that Connie was nice though.
I wish you luck with Spain - I went to a local phone shop to arrange it all and it was a perfect example of manana ... 4 or 5 supposed visits that didn't materialise, spread over the fortnight. Others here found it pretty easy, so maybe it's just me!
I found Tiscali very annoying, frankly they annoyed me so much I hope they go bust... what the two men and the dog in the support call centre will do then I can't say, probably just continue selling the double glazing and timeshares that occupy the period that Tiscali support doesn't use up

Cheers dave,

Where you postin from, if you dont mind me asking.

The reason I picked tiscali is they were the only outfit doing 24/7 in my neck of the woods..Brittany. had just moved over here, had to get on the net to watch my shares plummet.:-(

They were the first available as far as i know. Since then i have had a disc through the post from our old friends AOL, offering the same deal. Not worth changing now as I'm off to Spain in 6 weeks time....there to repeat the performance!

Suspect the real reason is they are not up to speed here, the net has not reached most down here methinks.

Come back with your thoughts.

regards dan.

here's a really great ISP but can you guess it.

It is a four letter word beginning with C
We all rely on it as ADVFN users.
Although most people would not say it was a rude word, many of us here would.

They aren't very reliable.

Answers on a postcard.

I'm looking for a new backup ISP.
Does anyone use fast24.co.uk... any comments, good or bad?

I am out in the Welsh sticks so have no access to broadband.

I have used freeuk.com for three years and I have never been let down. Connection stays on until I choose.

Highly recommended.

I've just had our second Telewest Blueyonder line removed because of the often painfully slow connection speeds and a dead stop most evenings. To answer one of the questions above, Blueyonder also does not cater for v90 modem technology.

Having had a new BT line put in, there's a choice of faster ISPs, many of whom offer always on deals.

Test 1. BT Internet 40kb/s 70% of max
Test 2. AOL access line 1 engaged
AOL access line 2 opens AOL only but no access to www

AOL seems to be a pain in the butt for many. Fair comment?

Cheers

As someone who will not get ADSL for years I stumbled across this from BT while looking at ISDN options;

Basically its broadband via satellite. Installation is £1000. Monthly rental is £85.

''BTopenworld is about to launch broadband internet access via satellite to all those of you who have been, until now, beyond the reach of broadband. This means that wherever you're based, you'll be able to take advantage of 'always on' high speed internet access to save you time and money to enhance your business.
BTopenworld is working with Gilat Satellite Networks to provide this two-way satellite broadband service. Not only will you receive your communications and data at up to ten times the speed of a normal phone dial-up, you'll be able to send at high speed, too. Your business will never need to tie up your telephone lines again.
The full UK rollout of this service is scheduled for Spring next year. However if you live in Northern Ireland or the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, the service is now available to a limited number of customers.
If you want to be one of the first to receive this brand new service in your area please register your interest. If you have already registered here and you are based in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland or Northern Ireland, you will be contacted shortly.''

Speeds dont seem as good as land based ADSL with a promise of 'up to' 512k and a 'peak time speed' of 150k. I think I'll give it a couple of years for other people to find out how bad it is (ooops my anti BT feelings got in the way there!) before ordering it.

For those interested the url is;

I use BY high speed Internet and echo djlungi's points - excellent with a few hiccups on route!

Connection is via same coax as cable TV and connects to an external cable modem. This connects to your PC via 10MB Ethernet. I do not have a phone line at home - just cable TV and Internet. I do not use BY email, although you get some xxx@blueyonder.co.uk addresses for free. I have 6-7 mail accounts that I access via POP/SMTP into Outlook. Internet is permanently connected while your PC is on, and you will need a firewall for this reason. XP's will probably do, but I'd recommend ZoneAlarm. I get sustained download speed close to the 512kb max most of the time, although I find DNS lookups are very slow, especially at peak times. Service costs £33 per month on its own, or £25 if you also have cable TV.

Hope that helps,

SpiceBoy

I'm still with Blueyonder dial up, you connect to the service through a telephone line, either using your only phone line(no voicecalls), or though a secondary line, freeing up line 1 for voice calls. If you need data and voice it might be worth taking a high speed connection for £25 a month. High speed is connected through your digital cable box, so the phoneline is not used.
I've seen blueyonder high speed in action, imo it's the best you can buy, if a little unreliable at times. I'm sure Telewest would be happy to send out a rep to discuss your requirements.
I hopes this helps.

Sounds as though you guys with the NTL 512KB connections have in fact got a 2MB one. Would keep very quiet about this as it must be the premium service costing far more !

Just opted for ntl broadband (512k) --totally amazed at the speed of the thing.

Most pages download instantly, have also just upgraded to ie6 (took 3 minutes)--old pc took 40 mins with aol/56k modem!

Just took the isp speed test--result was 1333 bps!

Why didn't i upgrade earlier!

G

PS no engineer needed--get an ethernet card,rj45 crossover cable, and 1 phonecall later you are connected.
