International Power was on a firm footing last night as investors moved in on the prospect of gains following the power generator's investments in Latin America, the Middle East and other fast-growing energy markets which have keep it ahead of less nimble European rivals.

Collins Stewart said the main European power generators were facing threats from political interference and from the fact that "EU power plants are nearing the end of their natural life cycles, given that the last major investment boom in much of the EU" was in the 1970s and 1980s.

These challenges are leading to uncertainty and higher investment needs "just as the investment climate is deteriorating". International Power, however, has "limited exposure to the EU woes", it said.

"It has exposure to fast growing energy markets in North America, Latin America and META [Middle East, Turkey and Africa], where it enjoys a significant market presence," Collins Stewart analyst Harold Hutchinson explained, helping the stock firm up by 6.4p to 338.5p.

He also pointed out that the company's relationship with GDF Suez, which is the biggest shareholder following a deal earlier this year, meant that it was backed by a strong balance sheet. "The influence of GDF Suez helps support an investment grade rating for International Power," Mr Hutchinson added.

I agree optomistic.Anywhere near the 300 is oversold. Was being hopeful looking at 280.
The idea was to buy back if they went lower ( which they have )but used the funds to buy into HSD pre divi

We have a 50% retracement from the rise to 340 I would be looking for a climb from here not a drop to 280. If you do get your 280 I reckon the stock will be well oversold and would rapidly climb away from there as it did last time.
Good luck whatever.

Power giants form Britain's nuclear family as reactor race hots up
By Peter Campbell

Last updated at 8:22 PM on 15th September 2011

Comments (1) Share The race to the reactor is hotting up between the firms vying to build Britain's nuclear future.

GDF Suez, the owner of International Power, plans to open an operational plant by 2023 at its site in Sellafield – and trounce its main rival, EDF.

Sources close to GDF said the company would fare better as a British provider as it was used to operating in a private-sector environment, unlike the French stateowned EDF.
The race to the reactor is hotting up between the firms vying to build Britain's nuclear future
'I'm not saying EDF are bad at running nuclear,' said the source, 'I'm just saying GDF will be far more comfortable in Britain.'

The company runs seven nuclear reactors in Belgium, and is involved in projects in countries including Saudi Arabia, Chile, the United States, Poland and Turkey.

The source said GDF would avoid the costs incurred by its rival, which sunk £12.5billion into British Energy in 2009 and paid £300million after outbidding GDF for a site in Somerset.

'GDF walked away from that auction,' they said. 'Next time it was the only bidder, and got the site at Sellafield for £70million.'

EDF has a significant head start, having received planning permission for its location, while GDF does not anticipate starting construction until the end of 2016.

Its plant will be run by NuGen, a consortium of GDF, Scottish and Southern Energy and Iberdrola.

Chief operating officer Olivier Carret yesterday said the decision had been taken to go into Britain 'after seeing which market had a need for the technology'.

Another senior GDF source said the group saw a 'nuclear vacuum waiting to be filled', adding: 'Within Europe, if anyone wants to invest in nuclear power then Britain is the only option that is open.'

A third contender, Horizon – comprised of RWE and E.ON – plans to have a plant up and running by 2025.

Headline: MARKET TALK: JPMorgan Raises International Power To Overweight
Date/Time: 25/08/11 07:31:10-BST ?
Codes: IPR.LN

0631 GMT JPMorgan Cazenove upgrades International Power (IPR.LN) to overweight from neutral and increases its target price to 365p from 315p. It says the stock has been the worst-performing UK utility year to date, driven by negative EPS revisions and concerns over the potential delay at the Jirau hydro project in Brazil. However, JPMorgan believes that momentum for the company may be shifting due to improving Texan spark spreads putting upward pressure on earnings, more visibility around the existing construction program and potentially more news flow around new development projects. Shares closed Wednesday at 307p.
