Special dividend apart, what is the divi yield % of the normal dividends? ADVFN list 12.5p/sh or 3.85% Is that correct? ADVFN financials not always up-to-date or trustworthy. I have also looked on the internet but still not sure.

The dividend wasn't funded from IPR's balance sheet. The wider GDF Suez group have paid it, as sailing john says, in order to get their hands on the business.

It was the price they had to pay to buy the business - only paid to the old IPR shreholders. This capital industry is funded via debt - the takeover by GDF will make debt easier to raise and cheaper as they now have the backing of GDF Suez.

What is the sense of paying out such a large dividend when their debt is so large?

Up to the close of the market yesterday the shares were trading cum-dividend so selling would have transferred the dividend to the buyer.

Picking up on sailing johns point the market is, at the current price, giving no credence to the benefits and synergies claimed for the enlarged group. Some holders may sell now that the dividend is in the bag so the share price may fall in the near term. After the 25th Feb there may be some reinvestment of dividend which may cause the price to rise.
Just thinking out loud mind!

No doubt I am wrong, but was the best plan to sell yesterday at best Bid, and BUY back the same today at c330p, the difference is profit! Then on 25th Feb 11, pick up your 92p per share dividend?

Only a novice you know.

Surely, if you held yesterday, today your c92p per share down, which you get
back on the 25th!?

The 92p incentive was exactly that. They were trading at 300-320 prior to the announcement in July 10. The 92p was confirmed in August 10. We have had 92p plus a little in the price.

Today's fall was always going to be about 92p - the only incentive to hold or not through the XD date was a possible small tax difference between cap gain and income depending on your circumstances. The big boys are of course calling the shots here.

Well we are almost trading after the xd at no gain to the shareholders. I was under the impression that the 92p was an incentive for the shareholders to accept the GDF offer. Shafted by the French it seems.
Wonder when they are next going to take us for a walk on a slippery river bank.

In accordance with the statement made on 3rd February, the 92p dividend will be paid on the 25th February.

Anyone know when the divvy will be paid - had a quick scout around but couldn't find anything.
Don't think I'll buy back in - can't bear the thought of funding all that frenetic anglo-french management activity.
Will keep the divvy monies in the energy sector though.

Yes it looks good and what's important buying now gets you more shares for your bucks so you have a leverage on the company's future prospects. Some holders may be waiting for the dividend to fund a further purchase. If you are in already and think it's good then it's, for me, good enough reason to add. On the other hand the deal might not bring the anticipated results. Like everything else if there were a definite answer there wouldn't be a market.

IOhere, unfortunately the share price has been marked down more than I would have expected so it would not have been a good move short term. However longer term I am happy to hold and had I bought extra yesterday I feel sure that it would have been well worth while.

Why would anyone want to pay stamp duty on that part of the share price which is being returned to them in a few days time and on which if they are a higher rate tax payer they pay additional tax? Dividends are money, they don't grow on trees!
There may, however, have been a case for establishing a capital loss but many view letting such possible future tax benefits dictating investment strategies.

I would have expected a stronger price today, being the last day for divi buying.
Well I'm holding on so it's fingers crossed for the morning.

Poor finish to the end of the day.
Large uncrossing trade taken the share price the wrong way.

A greater determinant is likely to be the reinvestment of the dividend by holders not wishing to see their stake diluted.

A question for those who understand market dynamics.
If we assume that the shares issued to GDF Suez are locked away safely in their vaults never to be sold, can we assume that the smaller free float (in % terms) will drive the price upwards and will the smaller free float lead to more volatility or less volatility in the share price?.
(I don't know what the old free float number was but whatever it was it is now only 30% as big.)

"An aggregate of 3,554,347,956 new International Power ordinary shares (the "New Ordinary Shares") have been issued in connection with the Combination to subsidiaries of GDF SUEZ. Admission to listing on the Official List of the UKLA and to trading on the London Stock Exchange's main market for listed securities of these New Ordinary Shares, and re‐admission of the Existing Ordinary Shares, occurred with effect from 8.00 a.m. today.
................Following the issue of the New Ordinary Shares, the Company's issued share capital consists of 5,092,261,657 ordinary shares of 50 pence each with voting rights."

So the new company is now being traded.

The Boards of International Power plc (the "Company") and GDF SUEZ are pleased to announce that closing of the Combination of International Power and GDF SUEZ's Energy International Business Areas (outside Europe) and certain assets in the UK and Turkey ("GDF SUEZ Energy International") occurred today.

The combined business creates a global leader in independent power generation with over 66,000MW of gross capacity in operation and committed projects expected to deliver 22,000MW of gross capacity by 2013, with strong positions in major regional markets and an attractive growth profile.

Sir Neville Simms, Chairman of International Power said: "The completion of this transaction creates a high growth, world leading independent power generation company. This is a major milestone in the development of International Power. The enlarged group has a strong pipeline of committed new-build projects already in the course of construction, and enhanced access to further significant growth opportunities through its broader global presence. The group has a robust capital structure with improved access to attractively priced capital that will underpin the delivery of value enhancing growth for all shareholders."

66GW rising to 88GW by 2013 is big - equivalent to the entire generation capacity of a country such as the UK or France and I like the comment about access to attractively priced capital. I expect they will exceed the 88GW mark with further aquisitions over the next 3 years. Holding through special divi and beyond to see what combined results look like.
