"Since Sainsbury's have been granted an extension, it is more than probable that they are coming back with a higher offer. Otherwise, they would have called it a day by now."

No the reason for the extension is because the Steinhoff offer came just a few days before the original deadline. It certainly does not guarantee a higher offer.

It takes more than a couple of days for a big company like Sainsbury to get board members and advisors together to decide on the necessary course of action.

"Sainsbury's deadline to raise its offer has been extended to March 18, from an original deadline of today at 5pm.The Takeover Panel's deadline matches the one set for Steinhoff to also make a firm offer."

Maybe, maybe not

Some might say that John Rogers of Sainsbury would look a bit foolish to back out now, given his previous boasts that he was really only paying 250m for Argos.

Sainsbury granted an extension

as expected

Deadline now March 18

However if Walmart for example put forward a possible offer just before that deadline, then it could all be extended again

Assumed Sainsbury's will walk away as they cannot match Steinhoff. Thus many taking their profits on HRG as £1.75 thought to be the upper limit.

I think Odey asset management was short HOME because they thought the Sainsbury offer would not gain enough support from Sainsbury shareholders

But now we have a new all cash offer from Steinhoff
