I am slightly uncomfortable with the paranoia about silver smashes, even if occasionally months of production gets paper-sold in a minute. Although the overall correlation between the dollar and silver isn't quite as strong as some people make out, it's obvious that right now the dollar is a major driver for PM prices. So if there is a smash, it's happening with EURUSD rather than silver. And of course there is no way that the US economy can tolerate a dollar that is much stronger than it already is.

Charles. Most of the gold miners have debt and many who pay dividends also have debt eg FRES, POLY, HGM, ACA etc. POG was an example of a company going deeper and deeper into debt but still paying dividends and see where that got it (terrible management)!

HOC is making great strides as you say and is well run so they can well afford to pay a lowish dividend at this stage as debt is falling dramatically. I expect this year they will be building up their cash balance even more so that come next January they can pay off all or most of their 2021 Bonds 3 years early and save a packet on the interest due to bond holders.

Steve - I don't quite understand how a company can be profitable, yet still have debt but there you go, accountants can work miracles. Having said that, anyone can see that the company is making great strides and should deliver good returns for shareholders. At this price it makes good sense to buy and hold imho.

A dividend was reinstated last year after a few years of losses and thus no dividends. Broker forecast earnings for FY 2016 is $0.11 (double H1/16) although it could be quite a bit higher. H1 dividend was US 1.38c per share so based on this it's likely there will be a H2 dividend declared at or above the H1 payout.

H1 Interim report 2016.
Earnings per share ($ pre-exceptional) 0.05
Earnings per share ($ post-exceptional) 0.06

Commenting on the results, Eduardo Hochschild, Chairman said:
“Our long term investment strategy has now started to deliver strong results with an impressive operational performance combined with more positive precious metal prices which has in turn led to our re-entry into the FTSE 250. The Company has returned to profitability, materially reduced its debt position and is investing primarily in brownfield growth.
In this constructive environment, the Board has decided to pay a dividend of 1.38 US cents per share, representing approximately 25% of net earnings, which we believe is an appropriate payout at this early stage of the cycle.”
