Henri,

I was in a relatively small Tesco and they do sell HLL, although only two bland flavours. However, I do agree that the marketing needs serious attention.

I was in one of the largest Tesco today and they don't sell Hill Station or Losely. They do sell Haagen Dazs, Ben and Jerry's and their own brand of luxury ice-cream. The same applies to Sainsbury.

THIS IS MONEY'S WEEKLY SMALL CAPS
View looks good at Hill Station
James Crux, Analyst, Growth Company Investor
27 February 2006
OUR weekly review of the latest developments and hottest tips in the exciting world of the Alternative Investment Market is written by analysts at the UK's leading authority on fast-growing companies, Growth Company Investor.

HAVING completed two acquisitions last year, ice cream maker Hill Station has been transformed from a niche player into the UK's third-largest manufacturer.

Chairman Pieter Totte, a serial food entrepreneur who's had his advisory finger in the pies of Aim successes Glisten and Finsbury Food, says the reverse takeovers of Loseley and Granelli have given the group a presence across all segments of the ice-cream market.

He adds that the addition of Loseley's new 80,000 sq ft plant in South Wales provides 'one of the best factories in the sector'.

These operations have the capacity for at least £60m worth of annual production and he says total revenues of the new entity are 'about £18m'. So to use this capacity the company is producing retailers' own-label ice creams and has already seen a lot of interest. Retailers are looking for quality facilities and there's not an awful lot of capacity out there.

'Although our highest priority is to organically grow our own brands,' informs Totte, 'the real growth at present will come from own-label production.' All three of the group's brands will be boosted by the improved production facilities, of which 85% of production has been moved over, and the lower costs will be a great boon to the bottom line.

Losses for its 15-month period to the end of October dripped to £792,000 on sales of £1.2m, but the figures did not include anything from the acquisitions. Presently priced at £15.8m, Hill Station is valued below sales.

Recommendation: Buy.

I think the share price is now in a consolidation period...not sure what in the February financial results which contained not much news from the Jan 17 trading statement provoked the price to go up so much given the fact that the market yawned with the Jan 17 statement...I have not sold and am holding for the present ...the wide bid offer spread and thin market discourages trading for the sake of it. My guess is that this time next year the price will be 1.5p higher.

Harvey,

Watch them for a while; the recent recovery's built upon rather shaky foundations that will take quite a time to consolidate IMHO. It's hard to see a short to medium return on an investment here, but might come good in a few years.

I am unsure - I have watched them for a while and the lack of news flow is very poor!

Interesting that today's annoucement of results which are of historical interest only and an update which only added the fact that they have made partial progree is winding up the Cheadle operation provoked a healthy share price increase whereas the Jan 17 update which had more news produced no reaction.
The shares are as of this pm IMJ sensibly priced at 4/5/5.25

I don't hold, but do like some of their products, shame my local tesco's stopped stocking them. I have to question HLL's growth strategy... they've created another senior role! (even though they aren't making money). It's about time they did some proper marketing, the word of mouth marketing just doesn't seem to be working.

while I do not dispute the validity of charts for companies whose share price has liquidity and who have a good underlying business I would rather question their validity for a company like HLL with its very limited liquidity and chequered financial history.
Following the Jan update I see no reason for holders to want to sell, although I guess some may need to...we have finally got the 1p increase that I opined the jan update merited.
