New research update from Edison:

The announced share placing should enable Helius Energy to progress its Avonmouth project. Helius stands at a discount to our revised base case SOTP valuation (32p/share). A modified fuelling strategy at Rothes and higher power prices at Rothes and Avonmouth would increase our bull case valuation to 44p/share.

The stockmarket has welcomed yesterday afternoon's announcement by biomass power plant builder Helius Energy (LON:HEGY) that it plans to raise £6.6 million via a share placing at 16 pence per share. The news has helped to boost interest in the shares both yesterday afternoon and this morning, while broker Northland Capital Partners said that it maintains its 'buy' rating for the firm's shares with a price target of 54 pence each. House broker Ambrian also said the shares were a 'buy'.

A GROUP of investors, including shipping scion Alastair Salvesen and Stagecoach co-founder Ann Gloag, are pumping cash into Helius Energy, the firm behind a distillery waste-to-heat plant at Rothes, in Moray.

Following the share placing, Salvesen will hold a 20 per cent stake in the company, while Gloag will have a 3.6 per cent shareholding.

There's updates for Corde, Avonmouth and Southampton as well as how the placing proceeds will be used. Perhaps too long to paste here.

Proposed director appointment

The Company seeks to maintain proper standards of corporate governance for a Company admitted to trading on AIM. In order to ensure that the composition of the Board remains balanced, and that appropriate levels of independent scrutiny are maintained, the Company intends to appoint a new independent non-executive Director. Such appointment is likely to take effect after the Placing has completed.

£6.55m placing announced today (at a premium to the price) - 16p.

Helius Energy proposes to raise £6.55m through a placing of new ordinary shares at 16p apiece.

The company says the placing - which is subject to shareholder approval - raises a substantial amount of capital, at a premium to the current market price.

CEO Adrian Bowles said: "We are pleased to have secured this significant capital investment in what are tough market conditions for financing.

"This placing clearly demonstrates that investors have confidence in Helius' ability to develop high quality projects and the potential to realise value from its portfolio.

"We believe that biomass energy is becoming an increasingly important part of the UK's energy mix.

"The capital raised allows us to continue to develop our pipeline of other projects which follows the achievement of financing Helius' CoRDe project in Scotland earlier this year."

Looks like the ROCs review is delayed. Most affected are biomass projects.....

RNS from 12 September, a shareholder with a 3.46% interest in Helius - ALASTAIR SALVESEN

He's mentioned in the Independent article about Angus Macdonald, which was published in early August this year.

"Another new investor is Alastair Salvesen – scion of the great shipping family, who runs Dawnfresh, the seafood business; he has just bought a 2.5 per cent stake. As one said: "We're a bit like children following the Pied Piper; he's just got that entrepreneurial gene – never stops."

Indubitably.

Interesting snippet - Edison updated their Investment Summary on Friday.

"nor indeed the potential for Rothes to augment its value by modifying its fuelling strategy (generating by using more draff and less wood)."

thanks for that. the article also reinforces my point:

"The biomass fuel source will initially be imported, which will add to its carbon footprint and raise questions about the overall sustainability of the project, for example whether the biomass competes with other potential land uses such as growing food.

To be eligible for support from the Renewables Obligation, generators will be required to report on the mass/volume, type of biomass, its format, whether energy crop or production residue, whether an environmental certification has been met, and if so which one, and country of origin.

The government is considering whether to apply sustainability proposals covering indirect land use change (ILUC) to biomass and biogas.

Drax claims that it is keen to develop the use of indigenous biomass fuels where available and the company is encouraging the development of local energy crops and other renewable supplies. According to the Environment Agency, burning residue from UK forests yields by far the greatest carbon savings.

But the Arup review of renewable electricity technologies in the UK published in June predicts that any solid biomass-burning plants over 50 MW are bound to be using imported biomass, while only smaller plants will use biomass sourced indigenously."

However, "any progress with the investment will be dependent on the government's final decision on the future support levels under the Renewables Obligation," said Melanie Wedgebury, head of external affairs for Drax.

Charles Hendry has said that the review will be completed by the autumn.

Dorothy Thompson, the chief executive of Drax, has welcomed as a good sign the statement in the government's Renewable Energy Roadmap that "biomass co-firing is a cost-effective renewable"
