This is a funny thread - Man Utd are capable of "dishing it out" as
any other team over the years.

I'll tell you why we sold Upson.
Wenger rated Upson and thought him capble of playing premiership football, but felt the injury he suffered took the edge of him and would prevent him from becoming top class. By top class good enough to deal with top class international strikers.
Wenger didnt want to keep him just to play vs the likes of Sunderland, west ham and bolton, he wanted a player who could hold their own in Europe.

Now Im not saying Cygan or Stepanovs is the player, in fact im sure they are not, but Wenger certainly felt that Cygans euro experience wouls do as a stop gap.

Forget Upsons form on loan, it was a Reading, not quite the same as what he wuld come up against at Nou Camp or San Siro.

fickena,

We sold Upson obviously because he was English.......Years ago he was seen by most people as the replacement to Adams or Keown, which I think he would have been by now given the chance.

Also, we had Alex Manninger and Richard Wright both of which were seen as replacements to Seaman, but guess who is still here? I think a lot of people forget that Manninger kept six clean sheets in 1998 to wards the end of the season when Seaman broke his finger, then the following year he has a bad game and Wenger publicly slated him.........the rest is history. If Stuart Taylor is not given a chance I would not be surprised to see him go as well.

One thing about Cygan last night which I could not believe was when he was just outside the penalty area in the middle of the goal instead of simply heading the ball back to Seaman he chose to kick it over his head, needless to say to a Roma player!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hate to say this but the only English team capable of winning the CL play in Red but don't come from London :-(
