The Police have executed search warrants in connection with a Serious Fraud Office investigation into suspected fraud on the National Health Service. Today, 10 April 2002, officers of the Metropolitan Police Fraud Squad, together with officers from the National Crime Squad and the Strathclyde Police have executed search warrants at a number of residential and business addresses in England, Scotland and Wales. The searches were undertaken with support from lawyers, financial investigators and forensic computer specialists from the Serious Fraud Office. The searches are in connection with a major SFO investigation into a suspected conspiracy to defraud the NHS in relation to prices charged by suppliers for prescribed penicillin based antibiotics and warfarin between 1st January 1996 and 31st December 2000. The case was referred to the SFO after initial enquiries carried out by the Counter Fraud Directorate of the Department of Health. The six pharmaceutical companies involved are: (a) Generics UK Ltd. (b) Kent Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (c) Regent-GM Laboratories Ltd. (d) Goldshield Group Plc. (e) Norton Healthcare Ltd. (f) Ranbaxy (UK) Ltd. Note: Norton Healthcare Ltd is understood to be a subsidiary of Ivax Corporation. Ranbaxy (UK) Ltd is understood to be a subsidiary of Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. No arrests were made and no charges are imminent. The investigation is complex and is therefore expected to continue for some time. For operational reasons no further information can be made public.
