GlaxoSmithKline PLC said Brian McNamara, head of Europe and Americas at the company's consumer healthcare business, will now lead that division, replacing Emma Walmsley who has been appointed Glaxo chief executive.
The U.K.-based drug maker said Mr. McNamara would take on his new role immediately. Glaxo last week announced that Ms. Walmsley would succeed Andrew Witty to become chief executive of the company in March.
Mr. McNamara, 50, was head of Novartis AG's erstwhile consumer healthcare division, before it was pooled into a joint venture controlled by Glaxo last year. Before his 11-year stint at Novartis, he worked at consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble for 16 years.
