The American public appear to be asked the following"would you choose to be punched in the face or kicked in the stomach?" The above posts appear to indicate that the same choice confronts GSK shareholders! If HC wins things will not be good for Big Pharma. If Trump wins nobody knows what will happen in prectice!

The pharmaceutical industry has donated $589,344 to Hillary Clinton's campaign, according to the nonprofit research group Center for Responsive Politics. That's more than any other candidate - despite Clinton's proclamation that she's proud to call the pharmaceutical industry her enemy. The contributions in support of Clinton come mainly from individual donors who work for pharmaceutical companies, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. They may also include contributions from political action committees associated with drug companies. And despite Clinton's antipharma rhetoric, some say she may actually be the industry's safest choice.

Don't be so sure Toffeeman. Although I think Clinton will win as well I never thought the Brexit team would win, not in a million years.

Near £17 looked a tad steep to me, the current share price perhaps more reasonable,
if the UKX continues to fall GSK likely follows.

This was at £17 when pound was over $1.30 though.

Had a small amount just now.

GSK a major FX play so the fall understandable, however the share price already down from over £17.

May add a few more lower, depending on price.

Difficult call bt, we were very approx 1450 pre referendum,
ignoring the initial plunge.

The UKX is significantly higher, at least for now, and the £ dramatically
lower v $ and Euro.

Institutions who lend out stock increase liquidity by the number of shares that would otherwise remain dormant in long-term holdings. If you had infinite liquidity then you have 100% market consensus on value. So increasing liquidity improves market efficiency.

Other benefits are that long-term holders like pension funds get to increase their performance by receiving income through loaning the stock. Anyone who has a pension fund is most likely benefiting from shorting. Also, shorting has a corrective mechanism meaning that it increases the chance and opportunity for prospective investors to buy a shareholding of a company for a price converging closer to value. Anything that may allow prospective investors to buy into a good company for a fair price must be a good thing. Everyone tends to look at shorting from the view of shareholder rather than the view of prospective shareholder.

your explanation is misguided

long/short has got nothing whatsoever to do with quality of management and confidence therein

it's all to do with value vs price

in an efficient market then price = value

in an inefficient market then price NOT = value

if a share is being mispriced by the market then at some time the price will converge on real value

if share is currently under priced then rewards will accrue to those with long positions

if share is currently over priced then rewards will accrue to those with short positions

when you take a long or short position you are simply backing your analysis/judgement against the market

a good company with good management which is overpriced is not going to offer good returns to long positions

a good company with good management which is overpriced can provide good returns to short positions

Consider an oil company at the time crude oil price collapses…R30;

Rather idealised explanation, but not what I expected.

The fall in GSK after their results is not what I expected either. Surely the results are not poor enough to explain this fall of over £1.

When you go long you are backing the management to outperform and so you reward good leadership.

When you short you are saying that management will/is under-perform(ing)and so you are sending a signal that they had better get their act together.

So it makes inefficient markets more efficient.
