WASHINGTON (AFX) - Farmed salmon contains significantly higher levels of
toxic substances than the more expensive wild variety, a team of US and Canadian
researchers said.
An article published yesterday by the US review Science said analysis of
some two tonnes of farmed salmon from around the world notably found higher
concentrations of toxic chemicals known as PCB's, and chlorinated pesticides,
than in wild fish.
The pollution, which is a potential cause of cancer in humans, is believed
to come from the types of food given fish farm raised salmon, the researchers
said, adding that more research on the issue has to be done.
A statement released on behalf of the research team by the State University
of New York at Albany also said that European-raised salmon tended to contain
higher levels of contaminants than salmon raised in North and South America.
The researchers "cite the need for additional studies on salmon feed which
is high in fish meal and fish oil and a likely source of the contaminant," the
statement said.
It added that, on the basis of cancer risk criteria developed by the US
Environmental Protection Agency, "contaminant levels found in some farmed salmon
may be high enough to detract from the health benefits of eating fish."
Adding that their study is by far the broadest and most representative on
the issue released to date, they have recommended that consumers reduce their
intake of farmed salmon.

LONDON (AFX) - A body for the Scottish salmon industry has strongly
criticised the scientific study reported on today which claims that salmon
farmed in Europe is heavily contaminated by cancer-causing chemicals, and has
described the findings as "deliberately misleading".
"Research published in Science magazine this week appears to be deliberately
misleading in the advice it gives on farmed salmon consumption," Scottish
Quality Salmon, a quality assurance body for the Scottish salmon industry, said
in a statement on its website.
Meanwhile, the UK government's Food Standards Agency has urged people to
keep eating Scottish farmed salmon after the study claimed European farmed fish
is so contaminated by cancer-causing chemicals that, in the worst cases, it
should be eaten only three times a year.
