The epicenter was 80 kilometres (50 mi) west-northwest of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, with a depth of 19 kilometres (12 mi).[2] The earthquake was felt as far away as Beijing (1,500 km away) and Shanghai (1,700 km away), where office buildings swayed with the tremor.[7] The earthquake was also felt in nearby countries. 02/4/2008 14:00 | Thanks to zimzoot on the XTA thread....... Xstrata May Bid for First Quantum, Alumina, Citigroup Says By Mark Herlihy March 28 (Bloomberg) -- Xstrata Plc, the Swiss company that ended takeover talks with Brazilian iron-ore producer Cia. Vale do Rio Doce, may bid for mining companies including First Quantum Minerals Ltd. and Alumina Ltd., Citigroup Inc. said. It may also consider acquiring ``smaller'' mining companies such as Albidon Ltd., Copperco Ltd. and Riverdale Mining Inc., the bank said. Zug, Switzerland-based Xstrata will find it easier to ``be the hunter than the hunted,'' London-based analyst Craig Sainsbury said yesterday in a note. ``We believe the market will continue to look for Xstrata to do the mega deal,'' Sainsbury said. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., Alcoa Inc., Lonmin Plc and Anglo American Plc ``could all come into the frame,'' he said. Brazil's Vale said March 25 that negotiations to buy Xstrata broke down because of demands from the Swiss company's 34 percent shareholder Glencore International AG. A takeover would have created a company larger than BHP Billiton Ltd., the world's biggest miner. Mining-company mergers and acquisitions rose to a record $158.9 billion last year, according to PricewaterhouseCoope First Quantum has increased 16 percent in the past year in Toronto trading, valuing the company at C$5.8 billion ($5.7 billion). Australia's Alumina, which supplies the raw material of the same name to aluminum smelters, has a market value of A$6.3 billion ($5.8 billion). Xstrata could save as much as $2 billion a year from a merger with Anglo, mainly from the coal and copper units, Citigroup said. ``The other option is for Xstrata to go it alone and wait for the commodity/equity markets to stabilize and Vale to return with another bid in six months,'' Sainsbury said.
