Bradwell,
please stop showing your lack of breeding by using bad language - no one is impressed by it.And please stop telling bare faced lies regarding your short stint in the army cadets, only the other week you admitted that you worked shifts on the conveyor belt at Argos -some people!

The fight is over. Must be now could all the fire fighters please go back to work. All the forces guys and gals want your jobs now they have seen the light. Just think soon you will be on real shifts and have to stay up at night.

Stew

I see and that includes your weekends and bank holidays I take it???

Of course it does! Makes no difference to me whether I have two days off midweek or two days off on the weekend.

BTW, you are aware that vast swathes of the population in the retail industry work weekends and bank holidays and service sector and factory staff work 'unsociable hours'?

Almost certainly correct in that most on this board only really care for number one. However, he basis of my argument is that I'd prefer to see the same number of firemen as at present, earning a decent screw. In some parts of the UK it may be a poor wage but in areas like Oldham, Sunderland and Carlisle it's a damn fortune when all conditions are taken into consideration. And the FFs in those areas know it! The London lads should fight for extra for themselves.
But now there'll be less working class employed as firemen in the future to the benefit, mainly, of the already wealthy. Bad call IMO.

Anyway I'm off shift now. Ta Ta.

Bradwell - Mmm! I think one of the differences between the brigade and SFs is that they can always find sufficient people to be fireman but, especially at this moment, they are very short on the SF front. Many Aussies, Fijians and Kiwis being imported to fill the slots I believe?

chrismick - Why post it you ask? Well, mainly because it's true and if you did need to be both fit and have physics and water squirting at A level then a rise may be justified because you would have a much lower number of suitably qualified applicants for the job. At the moment the criteria for being a fireman are a head for heights, the ability to take orders and, true, a degree of fearlessness. All qualities which are reasonably abundant in many working class areas and branches of the forces though.
And, no, I've no problem with A level status. Should I have?

I really do think you should have left well alone and I suspect many in the FBU (especially in the less well off areas) probably now agree. The next secret ballot will be interesting.

well said chrismick, A levels and degrees only spell academia, and I for one wouldn't want an academic to pull me ut of a blazing building, I would want a professional!!!

I understand why being ex- forces myself, but there is a principle here for witch they should stand up and be counted!! A levels and degrees are 2 a penny at the moment, but someone who will run into a burning building are few and far between, thats why you have 40 applicants per job, but still only end up with the best, rather like special forces, many apply but only a few get in!!!

so why post it, you must have a problem with people that have not achieved A level status max.Open up look at the person within you could open a whole new world and maybe one day find true enlightenment!

No, I know three guys who are, or were, in the brigade. All, like me, ex-forces. All three fine upstanding guys but not an A level between them. Nothing wrong with that at all in my view and I guess what I'm saying is that A levels and degrees are not really needed to do the job properly are they?
By the way the two still in the job are both against the strike but won't say anything official against it. I'm sure you understand why!
