UNASUR Countries 'Unanimously' Back Malvinas Claim

We Recommend the return of the Malvinas islands to Argentina is seen as a cause for all of South America.

The member states of Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) “unanimously” back Argentina's sovereign claim to the Malvinas islands, said Daniel Filmus, the Argentine official in charge of the claim, after meeting with the secretary general of the organization.

The Argentine secretary of Malvinas islands affairs met with UNASUR Secretary General Ernesto Samper Wednesday at the headquarters of the regional integration bloc, located north of the Ecuadorean capital of Quito.

"Samper reiterated that consensus within the organization with respect to Argentina's sovereignty over the islands is unanimous," said Filmus.

Filmus added that Samper supports bilateral dialogue between Argentina and the United Kingdom to resolve the long-standing dispute over sovereignty over the Malvinas islands. Samper also told Filmus that returning the Malvinas to Argentina is seen as a cause for the entire region.

Resolution 2065, approved by the United Nations 50 years ago, calls on parties to find a peaceful solution to the dispute. Nonetheless, the U.K. has been increasing its military presence on the islands in recent years.

In early September, Argentina introduced a resolution at a meeting of the G77 that called for dialogue to resolve the Malvinas issue. It was supported by 133 countries.

The issue over the disputed territory flared up in June when Argentina opted to pursue charges against oil companies operating on the islands. International law prohibits altering the state of disputed territory.

Known to the British as the Falklands, the Malvinas Islands have been held by the U.K. since 1833, when British warships seized the archipelago. Argentina has long disputed British claims to the islands. In 1982 tensions boiled over into a short war that claimed close to 900 lives, and ended with the U.K. holding on to the islands.
