Investors Chronicle

European Goldfields remains confident that approval for its environmental impact statement Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) in Greece is imminent, which should lead to final permitting.

The Romanian EIS is going through public consultation, yet the company expects to begin constructing these projects this year.

Final permitting will provide a strong catalyst to drive the shares, which remain a buy at 745p.

long term mate long term............

The Company confirms that it has not been asked to provide any additional information by the MOE regarding groundwater or groundwater pollution. The Company has previously received confirmation from a Special Technical Committee of the MOE that the final Environmental Impact Statement ("EIS") conformed with all technical requirements under Greek and EU environmental legislation.

In addition, the Company wishes to highlight that after full public consultation, on 10 December 2010 the local prefectural council unanimously supported the EIS and passed the same to the MOE for final approval.

What else would they say?

They have clearly been wrong footed by this news which now looks to have compromised both the minister and the company.

this is now a political issue and that will require a political solution. Therefore dont expect anything to be announced any time soon.

If you speak to the company as one of my chums did you will find they are very confident and these recent inuendos makes them even more so that things are very close to approval, after all they ahd 100% approval of the recent EIS.

Greece is probably one of the worst countries for this type of thing. There will be three or four tiers of corrupt departments working on a bottoms up approach with little clue what the other departments do or the legal standing or operation of such.

LOL, local prefectural council. What ever they have heard and written on a proposal, it will be full of legal holes, ambiguous and flawed generally full of legal mistakes and will simply be batted back to the very start.

This will go on for years in a game of corrupt incompetent ping pong, and get no where imo.

wishful thinking in my view. Quite clearly a briefing ocurred and quite clearly the Minister decided it appropraite to make the following statement to journalists.

"This is a polarising issue," Environment Minister Tina Birbili told reporters during a briefing on Thursday. "There must definitely be more consultation".

It spells delays and not a write off. The way this was handled gives the company a justifiable cause for complaint to the Ministry, which will roably get them nowehere and possibly even sour their ongoing relationship.

Lots of very well respected commentators in US & Canada have been plugging from EGU from when it was under £1.

Agree with the previous post about waiting till dust settles. All those ounces in the ground wont be going anywhere, but then again they wont be coming out of the ground any time soon.

Will be interesting (as an outsider) to see how low they go tomorrow before the buyers arrive.

Market makers will have to be on to of their game tomorrow. Its a pity they arent traded on SETS or I would have probably had a low ball punt myself.

Company Update

In addition, the Company wishes to highlight that after full public consultation, on 10 December 2010 the local prefectural council unanimously supported the EIS and passed the same to the MOE for final approval.

I don't hold at the moment (thank God) but these things happen, and it could be a good buying oportunity when the dust clears.

So the Greeks don't need the cash and don't need the jobs eh? Should we tell Angela Merkel?

It may take time but very likely this could be resolved in EGU's favour.

However, it does bring to mind a conversation I had about 4 years ago with a geo who had worked on this project. He said that these was local opposition.
