Specialist publisher Electric Word made its largest deal this week with the £2.7m purchase of rival SportBusiness Group, which operates in the growing markets of commercial sport and sports rights.

The immediate effect of the acquisition will be to lift Electric Word's adjusted pre-tax profits for 2006 to £705,000 and further benefits are expected from overhead savings and the application of its subscription management expertise.

Buy at 9¼p.

Smaller stock to watch

The AIM-listed Electric Word rose 38p [??] to 8½p on the acqusition for up to £2.7 million of SportBusiness Group, a specialist publisher that is owned by Stewart Newton, the founder of Newton Investment Management. After the deal, Mr Newton, who will receive part of the purchase price in £987,500 of preference shares convertible at 10p in two years, will become the largest single shareholder in Electric. Julian Turner, the chief executive, described the acquisition as "highly complementary" to Electric's existing sports publishing division.

I read today on Channel 4 teletext about Electric Word becoming a buyout target. Does anyone know any details about this?

bought more as this must be a good sign together with earlier trading statement, and although it appears to be a very full price it is noted that the acquisition is said to be profit enhancing in the first year.

Perhaps better times are around the corner - ELE is one of SCSW's naps for 2006 - hence the markup.

What's wrong with everyone? This company doesn't seem to put a foot wrong, and has been building up its business steadily over the last two or three years that I've been a shareholder. Yet the share price never breaks through 10p.

I think I should be patient. Does anyone agree?

Looking back, ELE would have been - and probably still is - an excellent 'trading' share (in at, say 5.5p, out at, say, 8p). A better scheme than simply holding on?
