I think May has used all her poison in Checkers tonight. I think Eng/Rus final looks plausible

Eng v Bel looks like a game neither side wants to win. I'd take 0-0 with us having 2 more bookings.
Whilst in public Southgate will say he wants to win every game, as will Martinez, that wont be true imo.

and that's the difference between Eng and likes of Italy or Germany...

should already be 1-0 up.

Kil - the lad justified Hodgson's faith in him tho.

Alli comes across as a down-to-earth type and not swayed by the media hype which is another plus

Of course I agree that Eng had more than one advantage over France with the match played at Wem as well as their frame of mind not being right.

Benz missing was another help

Kane a good bet to be the next Eng top scorer?
Posted at 07/9/2015 08:31 by m4m
b2 - Pardew wud be a great replacement for Hodgson

WE are not doing very well simply cos the prem pays too much money and attracts the JFs. The big clubs are not bringing through enough homegrown ones. The germans & french the latest to thank the top prem clubs for their wonga which will helps the respective clubs develop their youth.

2bf: Eng have some decent youngsters in Berkley, Stones, Shaw, Clyne, Kane, Ox and of course Stirling

Performance(s) cannot really be judged properly against a park-the-bus minow on a horrible pitch at a stadium with so few crowd and poor atmosphere etc

Hodgson has won all his qualifying games 2bf tho Capello did likewise and we all know how that ended up.

Commentators said it was to avoid Rooney having an injury on a horrible pitch with the game already won.

He looked frustrated sitting on the bench as the easy chances came along.

Great goal by Harry Kane (yes I know it was poor oppo but still well taken)

3 equal top scorers for Eng on 49:

Sir Bob, Roooney and Own Goal

stox - The Eng mgr's job is a poisoned chalice cos we expect too much when the reality is all these JFs in the prem (cos of the money) means our national team has suffered.

our odds for the Euro says it all:

and our world rankings sticks the knife in even deeper ;(((

abix - Done cos I remem homeboy complaining as well but others (at the time) wanted them to stay. No worries tho cos as rb said: everything has its day

Actually, I think someone else should start a new Eng thread with a more appropriate title cos the 'we can do it' was a nudge nudge wink wink play on the girls; and, sadly, we're not very likely to win a tournament again for the foreseeable.

My shout(s) would be for Jack or you to do it cos yer both seem very popular (smile) and have the knowledge.

Morning m8ys

Scots game will be a cracker (if not a technically standout one)

Competitive friendlies actually important for a change with Eng certain to qualify (famous last words ;))))))

Nice 1 Danny

Joe Hart
Jeered by the small band of travelling Slovenia fans for wasting time when he was slow to release the ball. The goalkeeper could not do anything to stop Jordan Henderson’s header. 6/10

Nathaniel Clyne
Looked comfortable on his senior England debut. Offered more of an attacking threat than Calum Chambers and defended well, cutting out one dangerous low cross. 7

Gary Cahill
Saw England’s run of clean sheets broken by team-mate Henderson, but did well to stop Kampl adding a second goal by producing a timely block as the Slovenian was about to shoot. 7

Phil Jagielka
The Premier League’s fastest player had few opportunities to display his pace, but failed to find the target with his head after being picked out by Rooney. A mistake almost let in Kevin Kampl, but Cahill blocked. 5

Kieran Gibbs
Drafted in because of a late injury to Leighton Baines, Gibbs was booked for a mistimed challenge in the second half and did not provide as much of an offensive threat as Roy Hodgson would have hoped for. 5

Jack Wilshere
Still learning his new job for England as a holding midfielder, Wilshere was forced to play too many balls over the top as his team-mates did not offer him any width. 6

Jordan Henderson
Produced a sublime header that lobbed over the keeper and into the net – unfortunately it was his own net. The midfielder is yet to find the form for club or country that he displayed last season. 4

Adam Lallana
Deployed in a slightly deeper role to the one he is more used to playing, Lallana produced a pin-point corner at the start of the second half that Wayne Rooney should have done better with. His good turn and shot forced the save from Samir Handanovic that Welbeck scored from. 8

Raheem Sterling
Showed no signs of tiredness at the top of England’s diamond. The Liverpool star did his best to spark Hodgson’s men into life, shooting wide and crossing for Danny Welbeck. 7

Wayne Rooney
Presented with his commemorative 100th cap by Sir Bobby Charlton ahead of kick-off and marked the occasion by edging closer to the England goalscoring record by winning and scoring a penalty. 5

Danny Welbeck
Failed to hit the target from a couple of good opportunities in the first half, heading a Sterling cross wide and shooting off target. But crucially put England ahead with a shot into the ground that bounced past Handanovic and doubled his tally with 19 minutes to go from a Sterling pass. 9

Hiya Brad ;)))))

Oh come on m8ys it was never gonna be a classic cos not losing the priority and onus on home team. We now just need to do the biz at Wem and it's samba time. And that's the pt: destiny is in our own hands after getting past a poss banana skin moment in a hostile environment.

Hart got out of jail early on and whilst they were the better team we shoooood have sneaked it at the death via Lampard.

Walker seems out of his depth when playing for Eng tho.

Cahill is a top player; and Ash Cole had a goodun as well as Gerrard albeit he got away with that defensive duck to fool opposing player in box.

The rest? Well we got the result.

But 2bf to Hodgson: he had a few 1st choice players missing and got the result.

THE TWITTERS

Praise for Lampard from a former colleague England Rio Ferdinand (‏@rioferdy5): "Congrats Lamps, great pro and goal scorer extraordinaire! #100caps"

Spain's Gaizka Mendieta ‏(@GaizkaMendieta6) is enjoying Ukraine's wing play – England are not: "Ukraine loving those diagonals from the left side! #UkrvEng"

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann (‏@DietmarHamann) can't understand why Michael Carrick isn't playing: "Carrick is one of the few top class players England got and he can't get a game. He does keep the ball as well as anyone. Beyond belief."

Ex-West Ham United defender Neil Ruddock (‏@RealRazor) wants Hodgson to bring on Jermain Defoe: "Get Defoe on ..."

England legend Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) can't understand why the Three Lions can't hold onto the ball: "We're on the precipice here. KEEP THE BALL."

QPR midfielder Joey Barton ‏(@Joey7Barton) can't fathom why Hodgson is playing Jack Wilshere out of position: "Wilshere has never been a number 10? Why does Roy 'the tactical genius' play him there? He's a ball playing midfielder. Needs to face the play."

Ex-England international Dean Ashton ‏(@Dean36ashton10) got his prediction badly wrong: "3-1 England!!! What was I smoking??!! #boresville"

More from Hamann (‏@DietmarHamann): "Wilshere is world class, done nothing in the game yet. Carrick is a vital part of United, won five leagues and Champions League and is not even considered."

Manchester United's Tom Cleverley ‏(@tomclevz23) is happy with a point in Kiev: "Good solid performance from the boys tonight sets us up for two big nights at Wembley!"

England legend Michael Owen (‏@themichaelowen) is impressed by the veterans: "Our best players are still the older brigade. Gerrard, in particular is by far our best player. Some overhyped youngsters... How many of the England players that pulled out of tonight's game will be available to play for their clubs this weekend?"

Finally, Stan Collymore (‏@StanCollymore) wants to see the powers that be address the issues: "If only Scudamore and his 20 chairmen realised that the league and England can work and grow together. Instead, one is destroying the other."

Ukraine v England: player ratings

Telegraph Sport runs the rule over the Ukraine and England players following their goalless World Cup Group H qualifier at the Olympic Stadium, Kiev, on Tuesday Sept 10, 2013.

Ukraine

Andriy Pyatov
Did sometimes flap at crosses but was always quick to come off his line. Made brave early block to deny Walcott and a good save from Gerrard. 6/10

Artem Fedetski
Given relatively few offensive problems by Milner and frequently pushed forward to offer width in attack before heading straight at Hart from a wonderful second-half chance. 6

Yavhen Khachiridi
Lambert was effective in holding the ball up but Khachiridi ensured that he rarely got behind the Ukraine defence and his anticipation limited England's chances. 7

Olexandr Kucher
Selected as captain in the surprise absence from the team of Anatoliy Tymoshchuk and was sound defensively despite being erratic in possession. 6

Vyacheslav Shevchuk
Had the difficult task of containing Walcott and was given several difficult moments early in the match but improved and also tried hard to get forward in support of Konoplianka. 6

Taras Stepanenko
Asked to sit in front of the Ukraine defence and was successful both in dictating possession and breaking up the rhythm of England, notably Wilshere. 7

Edmar Halovskiy
Technically competent and was particularly energetic in the first-half. It was his partnership with Stepanenko that ensured Ukraine controlled most of the game. 6

Andriy Yarmolenko
One of the main dangermen for Ukraine. Began well, pulling Cole out of position with his crossfield runs but was ultimately beaten in his head-to-head with the Chelsea left-back. 5

Oleh Gusiev
Asked to unlock England with his passing but wasted a succession of good positions. Generally negated by Gerrard's patrolling of the space in front of England's defence. 5

Yehven Konoplianka
Ukraine's most threatening and direct player. Seemed to target Walker at right-back for England and went only inches wide with a freekick that deflected off England's wall. 7

Roman Zozulya
A real weak link in an otherwise competent Ukraine team. Might have won an early penalty but his heavy touch meant wasting several very promising positions. 4

England

Joe Hart
His confidence does seem bruised by recent mistakes. Might have conceded a penalty with early challenge on Zozulya and did not always look in command of his area. 6

Kyle Walker
Given a big test against Konoplianka and found himself frequently dragged out of position, most notably when he almost conceded a second-half penalty. Also offered little help in attack. 5

Phil Jagielka
Partnership with Cahill is developing but remains an area of relative weakness in the England team. Improved in the second-half but was least convincing of the two centre-backs. 6

Gary Cahill
Vital to England's rearguard action. Made a series of important interceptions and also went close to scoring himself with two first-half headers. 7

Ashley Cole
Remains the man for the big occasion and still seems to retain that priceless ability to raise his game against better opponents. Yarmolenko was kept very quiet. 8

Steven Gerrard
His discipline and workrate were admirable in front of England's defence. Had an early shot well saved but, like the rest of his team, struggled to keep the ball. 6

Theo Walcott
Began brightly, immediately getting behind Shevchuk to force a brave save from Pyatov but his influence faded as England endured considerable second-half pressure. 6

Frank Lampard
A match to savour for winning his 100th cap rather than the performance. England struggled to get any control of the midfield and Lampard did not offer his usual attacking threat. 5

Jack Wilshere
His worst game for England. Was slow on the ball and frequently caught in possession before being replaced midway through the second half by Ashley Young. 4

James Milner
Did the job that Hodgson brought him into the team to do. Worked diligently down the right, helped break up Ukraine pressure and then moved infield when Wilshere came off. 6

Rickie Lambert
Starved of possession but did offer an outlet, particularly in the first-half when he held the ball up effectively. Was less influential during the second-half. 6
