'DS Smith packs a punch'

Packaging manufacturer DS Smith (SMDS) has managed to grow despite the subdued economic climate in Europe.

The Share Centre analyst Ian Forrest retained his ‘buy’ recommendation but does not have a target price for the company, which provides corrugated and plastic packaging in 25 countries as well as operating a recycling business. The shares inched 1.3p higher to 373p yesterday.

‘Earlier this month the group reported a 6% increase in revenues to £2 billion, but investors should acknowledge that pre-tax profits dropped by 20% to £91 million due to the strength of sterling and a rise in costs,’ he said.

‘However, DS Smith said the full-year outlook remained positive and it subsequently raised the dividend by 8%.’

He added that the group had experienced ‘excellent sales and earnings growth in recent years’ mostly due to an increase in online shopping and a demand from food producers.

‘Its strategy of adapting to provide customers with a growing range of serves… has helped drive growth and retain customers,’ said Forrest. ‘As a result, we currently recommend DS Smith as a “buy” for medium-risk investors seeking both growth and income.’

MONDI has been hit because of the London/Johannesburg quote and I think SMDS have slipped because MONDI have. If it comes back to 360p I will probably double up!

Looking at the share price drop - approx 10% since the results - this seems excessive even after the Wansborough closure costs hit - there seems also to have been a read across today from the Mondi drop - which also seems excessive!

Is anything else happening - other than general nervous worries?

Investors Chronicle:

Packaging specialist DS Smith (SMDS) has acquired Greek corrugated packaging business Cukurova. The company has a strong focus on the fast-moving consumer goods sector. Smith will also sell its minority stake in Cukurova’s Turkish corrugated paper and packaging entities to Cukurova. We reiterate our buy advice
