Nice to see DLG "performing strongly and well ahead of expectation"...augurs
well for the current year.

PDV "disappointing" but this year will be better than last.

Scratchcards could also do much better...the postal workers settled yesterday so probably no more walk outs...I view the regulatory changes as the company wanting clarification of what it can and cannot do and then the company will adjust its practices accordingly if its required to.

I have not read anywhere of anything like an outright ban on scratchcards (unless others know differently) so with a bit of luck it might not affect the company much at all.

All in all then the company should make somewhere in excess of £5m profit and over 2.5p EPS this year....a very good chance of a dividend as well.

Hoodless Brennan view:-

DM (DMP, 8p, £13.3m), the direct marketing group specialising in customer recruitment and database management, reports prelims to 31 December 2009 are in line with our expectations. The 40% increase in revenues to £25.6m (2008: £18.3m) combined with an enhancement in gross margins and cost savings drove adjusted PBT and EPS up 10% to £4.6m and 1% to 2.18p respectively. The acquisitions are fully integrated into the group. Following the fundraising, the group has strengthened its balance sheet and reduced net debt to £4.4m (2008: £8.1m). The Board is confident that the Group now has the strategic assets, market position and management to become a leading, fully integrated online and offline lead generation and direct marketing business and has commenced the process of shifting gradually and conservatively from turnaround and restructuring to investment and growth. There are currently no estimates in the market, but given the stock is trading on a historic PER of 3.7x, we believe the group is undervalued and upgrade our hold recommendation to a BUY with a target price of 11p.

Bid / offer price is 7.76 / 7.80
nms is 1,000 / 66,667.
We can only hope that when final results are announced that there is no negative news, and that the results kick start the SP, cause we have seen a dismal drift in price since that of the 2p rise after interim results.

Although in seeming gloomy the last trading update was in fact quite encouraging, and DM does appear to be firing on all cylinders.

Thanks for your posts. Seems a waiting game for final results, and as said above resolution the OFT dispute, which hopefully wont take too long, however we all are aware how long court proceedings can take.

I agree though that the 090 numbers on scratch cards are a bit of a scam and other companies may be dodgier than DM. Could not DM guarantee that by spending a maximum of say £1.50 on a phone call that one had a one in hundred chance of a cash prize of say £20, and one in one ten thousand chance of prize worth £1,000. Surely something can be worked out here between DM and the OFT.
Look at the Channel 5 late night quiz, they got 400,000 phone calls at 65p, and they must be making a fortune.

Alpha to Omega was a firm of IFAs - a Google search throws out some news about the FSA withdrawing approval before the company went under - I assume DW was a non exec here. There was an RNS last year or the year before about a family business failing too. Not a great track record but DM is his main interest, I believe. Did he want the cash out in 2008 to prop up other business interests ? - I'm not sure but it's a possibility.

Not sure about the OFT dispute - the company have always said they had better practices than the competition but are still being taken to court - I can't see much movement in the share price until this is resolved.

IMO this will be resolved through legal negotiations to avoid a long drawn out process. Afterall, DM are entitled to SOME remuneration of costs for handing out prizes in a free competition. Note 4 gives some indication; "to comply with the law in future" DM need to know specifically what the law requires. So far the OFT have just not been specific enough, they will have to be more specific if it goes to court. They (OFT) "may also accept undertakings from those involved in lieu of action".

With a pe of under 5, this has to be a good buy.

Re-reading the trading update report dated 5 January 2010 which appears to be very modest, the final results still do look like they could be very encouraging.

'' In the second half of 2009 the Group has seen steady organic growth with the
integration benefits of recent acquisitions delivered ahead of expectations,
providing continued resilience to challenging trading conditions. Following
recent measures to control costs, performance across all channels has seen good growth with all business units individually delivering a satisfactory
performance.
Regulatory Update - Recent operating bans imposed on ''our competitors'' by the premium rate regulator, PhonepayPlus.''

I feel quite encouraged. Any buying of DM - with the liquidity of the stock and most being in tight hands - could see the stock move up quite quickly.

So chaps are we as shareholders all going to be a little richer in the next 2 months after results. I sure hope so, as for some time now I have been finding it difficult to make any profit on the market.

I dont know how much impact Mr Williams had on the company Alpha to Omega (UK) Ltd, which he was director of that went into administration though, which must be a black mark. to a certain extent.

Chances of an RNS is slim as there has just been an update. I believe that the next set of news will be as Jeff says in late March / early April.

nms on idealing today is
sell 1,000 at 8.01p - buy 66,667 at 8.05p

As we have seen before these could easily again go up 2p, but as last time as they did, did not afterwards hold the gain.

As soon as someone does buy, however the goal posts on price could rapidly change. The MM now want to encourage trade, but how long this will last if punters do start to trade and how long this price will then be around is any one's guess. The MM do chance the spread and price at a stroke depending on trade, especially with most of the stock being in long term hands.

Jeff H - thanks for that info. - The question is why is the guy selling - fed up of waiting for the share price ise, or cause of the OFT situation.

They did say that the second half results would be better than the first, so the pe ratio should be less than 5, even nearer to 4.

However the more important factor that will affect the share price on results is the effect of the OFT investigation / outcome on the 090 numbers affecting DM's scratch cards, and a statement hopefuly from the company which will be forthcoming on, the affect of profits. But coming to a conclusion by the OFT and courts can take months and could surpress the share price until this is sorted out, or the company says it will not have too much effect on profits.

If the pe ratio continues at just over 4 eventually the share price must rise, it is a shame that the rise in share price is taking so, so long. We need some positive news but then the next set of news could be in April to know where we stand with DM.

I believe though DM is still worth holding cause of the low pe ratio, and past Management record.

But then if they wanted to dump a shed load, surely the MM would offer 7.5p or even 7p, as they are quick to drop or higher the share price on any sort of higher volume trades.

I think that the MM are just playing around, unless of course that they have too much stock, and are aware that there is some bad news around the corner.
What about the issue on the 090 premium rate numbers being looked at by the OFT? But then how much is that going to affect 2010/2011 profits - a little or a lot?

guru11

Spread price extremely narrow - 8.01p / 8.05p
Very strange. The MM appear to be looking for punters to trade.
8.05p would appear to be cheap to buy,
but 8.01p to sell would also be cheap to sell and not a good price.
Lets hope that the commission on the scratch cards with the 090 numbers on don't damage trade / profits too much.
But they did say that profits in the second half would be better than that of the first half.

Does raise questions - What percentage of DM profits are from scratch cards?
And how will this affect DM profits?

I can see what the OFT are getting at, probably most cards are winners and one can spend up to £6 on a phone call, and at the end of it receive a low value item or nothing at all for the cost of the call.

But then in saying that what about the channel 5 is it tv program that asks viewers to phone in with an answer to name a ..... according to their board which they charge 65p per call for, and the chances of getting through on the tv program is very very small, and their income massively exceeed the pay out of prizes.

DM needs to establish with the OFT the difference between their scratch cards, and the tv program premium rate lines and the lottery. I have had letters from Ross On Wye saying that I have won a prize send an admin fee of x to receive the prize which I would never receive. Is this linked to DM groupd as well or is it a coincidence that it came from Ross On Wye.

Lets hope the position on profits is made clear quite quickly otherwise this could affect the share price in a negative way. Although in saying this the last update was quite positive. But it is next years potential profit that will affect the share price

Since DM had already announced they were seeking "definitive legal interpretation and explicit direction" seems a rather petulant reaction by the OFT. If I were the High Court Judge I would want to know SPECIFICALLY what the OFT didnt like; eg what constitutes an unreasonable/reasonable premium rate line charge. The previous £1m winner gives DM some firm ground imo because this makes all cards potentially of high value.
