29/1/2016 13:35 | The Times' Tempus said on the face of it, the numbers aren't good and it caps off a difficult number of years since former chief executive Paul Walsh left. "Diageo has been hit by the curb on giving spirits as gifts in China, the general slowdown in emerging markets and disappointing trading in North America, a third of the total." It said the company is doing its bit to turn things around in the US by sending its former CFO over to turn things around, which is expected to see sales rise by 8.5%. While attempts to turn around the US are working, Tempus said the improvements are already priced in, and rated the company at 'avoid for now'. | philanderer

29/1/2016 09:57 | Diageo earnings nadir could be here Beverage company Diageo (DGE) has made some improvements as work behind the scenes starts come to fruition. Shore Capital analyst Phil Carroll placed his ‘hold’ recommendation ‘under review’ but does not have a target price for the stock. The shares fell 0.7% to £18.54 yesterday. ‘Diageo has announced its interim results for the period ended 31 December 2015. Overall, we believe the results show some improving trends with organic volume growth of 1% and organic net sales growth of 1.8%,’ he said. ‘Overall, we believe these results represent a positive step in the right direction for Diageo with the work being done behind the scenes looking to be bearing fruit. ‘As we indicated in our preview, this could be the nadir to the earnings downgrade cycle which we will look at in more detail… ahead of doing so we put our “hold” recommendation “under review”.&rsquo | philanderer

28/1/2016 17:05 | Ivan Menezes, Diageo, Chief Executive, commenting on the first half said: "Diageo has become a stronger, more competitive business. We have delivered volume growth, a stronger top line, improved the performance of our key brands, driven cost productivity and continued to generate strong cash flow. While trading conditions remain challenging in some markets, Diageo's brands, capabilities in marketing and innovation and our route to consumer have proved resilient. I am confident that Diageo can deliver improved, sustained performance. For the full year we expect volume growth to drive stronger top line performance, margin to slightly improve and strong cash conversion to continue. This will set us up to deliver better momentum in F17, with productivity gains supporting margin expansion and investment in growth. We remain confident of achieving our objective of mid-single digit top line growth and 100bps of organic operating margin improvement in the three years ending fiscal 19." | jdb2005
